Couple rosies down!

Opening morning, Hohriverrunner found this 3 pt hanging out all by himself. His son, and me and another buddy were making a push about a mile away and didn't know the gunshot was his for about an hour when he finally got us on the radio and said "Bull down! Are you guys gonna get over here or what!?" We were all excited and had a good time packing it out on packframes. Only took a couple hours and meat was hangin on day one!

However, the title says COUPLE Rosies Down.   Where is the other one?

The next morning, I took off by myself on the bike down a gated road. A few miles in, I got to the patch of old growth I wanted to hunt. It's steep enough and thick enough to keep just about everyone out, but I know the bulls like this area. I dropped a few hundred feet below the road and started sidehilling on a decent game trail. My expectations weren't high, and I was thinking about where I was going to go the next five days.

About an hour later and a half mile along, I came to an open draw and could actually see more than 20 yards! I glanced up the draw... nothing. I looked downhill and... holy antlers!!   This bull was facing me, standing up with his head down, munching on some ferns at about 70 yards. I crouched to get a rest, but some bushes were in the way. He still had his head down, so I slowly took about ten steps down the hill, and again crouched to get a solid shooting position.

I don't know how long I waited. 20 seconds or 5 minutes. Probably 20 seconds. Finally he lifted his head to glance around and I let him have it, direct to the chest. One shot, clipped his heart, hit a lung and the bullet exited before the guts. He dropped right there, and was done by the time I got to him... This was going to be my third year of hunting hard the entire week of modern elk season, and I finally had my first bull on just the second day! A beautiful 5x6. 

That's when I realized how much work I had in front of me. Since he was pinned against a log on a hillside, I had no choice but to cut from the top down. Got the quarters and everything else off his right side, and it took everything I had to get him turned around. By myself, it took almost 4 hours to get him cut up, in game bags, tied to a tree. Took about 45 pounds out in a game bag, which sucked without a pack frame.

When I got back to cell range I called my dad and told him to get packed! The five of us from the day before, plus my pops, rode in early the next morning and got him out in one trip... five hours roundtrip. We were all pretty soaked by the end.

I'm glad I have good friends!! The next time I tell them I'm going somewhere steep and deep, they'll probably lock me up in the shed. 

Luck was on our side this weekend!

Great hunt you guys! I love the red, alder rubbed color on the 5x6. Rosies of that size are few and far between. Congrats to both you guys.

Great bull! Way to put in the hard work obviously it payed off for you. I'm still waiting on my first Rosie. Wont give up or try anything else until I get him.

It's a 5 x 6.  Point coming off the back of the right antler.  Deffinatly a very nice bull.  Pictures make it look smaller than it really is!
