Umtanum creek rec area
« on: December 08, 2009, 02:20:26 PM »
Anyone ever quail or chukar hunted the Umtanum creek rec area or even quail hunted in Joe Watt canyon.  Thinking of attempting a hunt there soon, i'm sure there are a few birds around.

Well, if feeding has begun it is.......

"No campfires allowed from April 15 to October 15. Each winter the gates are locked and the area is closed to all public access for the protection of wintering elk. The closure begins upon initiation of supplemental feeding, typically in early to mid-December, and reopens May 1."

It should be, but it isn't yet.  I thought it was too, so before going up there and seeing that it is, or worse yet going up there and getting in trouble I called and talked to Wayne at the e-burg office and he said you can still drive up Robinson canyon, and Joe Watt, which I was shocked.  Hunting is still open up there as is the wenas, part of the Wenas is gated and you cannot drive in but was told it is still open to hunt.  He said most likely next week it will be closing and feeding will begin, thus my hunting opportunity in the area will be short lived.

I have hunted uptanum a number of times.  Never seen any game birds up there, but then again, I dont have a dog to hunt with.  I more quail on the side of canyon rd then I do anywhere else.

So I hunted the rec area saw a bunch of bighorn sheep, some mule deer does and I think 1 magpie.  Dont recommend hunting it for upland game, thought i may get into some chukar up high but didn't see or hear anything.

When the conditions right, all you have to do is drive down the road to see them.
