She Points!
« on: January 20, 2010, 05:09:07 PM »
Ok so I took my 10 week old gsp/lab out and put her on some live pigeons (Thanks DDFEVER)! I put the pigeons under some brush so she cant see them and lead her toward them from downwind, she starts smelling them and follows right to them and will go on point at the brush :IBCOOL: I move the brush so the pigeon will fly and restrain the dog from chasing, I have the pigeon restrained to a long string so it will only go so far and then I can lead her around a bit and then toward the bird again. I need some advise as she will grab the bird if she gets close enough and can see it.

That may be hard as a lab's instinct is to try to catch the bird. I am not sure what to do but good luck on your venture.

I would let her chase, bite, chew, play what ever she want to do at this age. That way she will not be afraid and birds will be fun. When she get older you will want to put her on a lead she will find the bird and want to bump it that's OK. When that happens you'll hold her back  even if you have to whirl her. When she holds you need a second person to flush and shoot the bird.Only when she holds till the bird is flush by your helper and he shoots will you let the dog go. Keep learning to small sessions so she wont shutdown on you if you put to much pressure on her it will take longer to get results. This is just one opinion. Rember to keep it short and exciting.

so you are saying not to keep her on a lead to keep her from chasing? she seems to really enjoy finding and grabbing the pigeons and definitely has no fear of them, I have been keeping these outings to a bout 15-20 minutes, I let her find the bird about 4 times.

You could leave the lead on so she gets use to it but she only 10 weeks old so don't really do allot with her . Just play with her. Mabey in a couple months start doing a few little things.
