i heard a teaser on the news this morning about a guy getting convicted of poaching a trophy rosi in 2007, had to leave for work before the story was aired. anyone have the details?

i wonder if he knew that he was in the park. of course ignorance isnt an excuse. but if you were gona poach and elk in the park why would you do it on the boarder, i duno maybe just to easily sneak it out. or maybe he made a bad shot and it ran into the park. 1 mile is pretty conservitive for a gut shot bull. it would be interesting to find out all the facts.

The article says he hiked 1 mile into the park and bugled the bull in. Doesn't sound like it was an mistake.

I wonder how he got caught.  Seems to me you could walk a mile into the park in a lot of places and run a pretty low risk of getting caught.  Maybe he bragged to the wrong person?

He must have figured that he would not get caught since he was bowhunting and no one would hear a shot.

I assume a hiker must have stumbled upon the gutpile and called it in.  After that, it must have been a matter of the wildlife officer doing a bunch of investigating to find suspects.  Must have been a pretty good job by the game warden to find the poacher.

Lame...The penalty for such action should out weigh the desire to poach.  Fine should be $20k++++, and loss of hunting rights for life in every state.

   And to take a pic at the kill site. To me that is like killing someone and taking a pic of yourself at the crime scene.

At least he got sentenced.  The native americans are try to get it where they can legally hunt all these locations.  Besides if they do hunt them and get caught they are basically told not to do it again.  Hat to throw the N.A. thing in the mix, but it could be worse.

This is not uncommon. The fine used to be only $75.00 for an elk.

Regardless of the amount of fine ,which should be more, the hunting suspension should be ten years which would carry more weight than the $$$ to most of these guys. Poaching penalties are lame in this state! I know a guy who is a guide and was busted for poaching a mature bull out of season a few years back and while he lost his own hunting rights for 3 years the judge still let him continue guiding! I am sure most of his clients have no idea of this and since Washington doesn't require a license he has kept it quiet and most people will never know. I say raise the $$ penalty and loss of hunting rights for minimum 5 years including being in the woods during any open season. That would make them think twice. nwhunter

And people wonder why poaching is on the rise   You'd think the state would fine the ever living hell out of poachers because they could then turn a buck.  Shoot if it wasn't for my ethics and morals 80 hours of community service sounds like a pretty good trade for a trophy rosi.
