I've been using Power Belts, but i'm going back to the drawing board. There are 2 or 3 others I want to try.

been using Maxi balls and Maxi hunters in mine but I think I will make a change as well, maybe just powder though I don't know, maybe I'll get a new gun !!

I have always had great luck with the maxi-ball. also killed one big ole cow with a hornandy great plains it worked fine but I been thinking of going to a lbt and a sabot. John

Ive been looking at the dead center sabots myself, as of now Ive been using the Knight lead saboted....kinda plain but get the job done.

I have allways shot Knight 310 grain sabots with 100 grains of triple 7 powder. I guess I got lucky right off the bat and haven't had to dicker with anything else out of my TC Firehawk. The accuracy is deadly out to 130 yrds or so I'm no sharpshooter I guess at least I have hit everything I've shot at (except for one miss fire) Even tmike hit an elk with mine out at 114, And you see my what it did to my bull this year Double lunged and exited and he only went 80 yards, no tracking involved!
At the range I am between a 1" and 2" group at 100 when I'm feeling it.  So I am confident the gun is on but my Black Diamond doesn't except the same bullets as well so that's a story for another day!

I shoot the 405 gr. power belts in my .54 cal. Remington.
So far three shots three one shot kills on bull elk.
All three shots have been from 50 to 125 yards through the ribs, all three bullets were found against the hide on the far side. They were flattend and fragmented.
They work very well but I don't know how they would do on a direct shoulder shot or any other heavy bone.

The White bullets shoot really well out of my White. Tried some of the sabots out of my T/C. Haven't really figured out which one shoots best yet.

After lots of experimenting with shooting different bullets through a paper target into a rotten stump and digging them out I came up with a cast 410 gr. minnie hollow based which I cast from soft lead in my 54 cal. The hollow base allows the skirt to load easy and swell tight against the barrel rifling when fired. The bullet mushrooms good and shoots good, leaning against a post at 100 yd. I get consistently less than 5 inch groups with open sights.

You won't find them in any store in Washington. I ordered mine from Cabela's. They are very reasonably priced...only $18 for 36 bullets. The sabots they come with are a little tight in my T/C Black Diamond, so I also order the Harvester "crush rib" sabots from Cabela's and they load a lot easier. It all depends on the size of your bore though. They may work just fine with the sabots they come with. Here's a link:

  I shoot the 480 gr. white bullet out of my .50 ca. Remington 700 with 105 grains of pyrodex r/s select. I've bought triple 7 but haven't shot for group yet. I'm also switching to the 600 grain white bullet.

  Sabots shoot real well but I don't like how the plastic fouls my barrel. I also muzzleload in Oregon and sabotted bullets aren't legal, either are the 600 gr. whites (bullets cannot be more than twice the length of the diameter) so I'll shoot the 480's when I hunt across the river.

I like the Bufalo Bullet's.  I use 219 gr., with a 100 gr of pyrodex pellets.  Ive been hitting the sweet spot
@ 100 and 150 yrds, iron sight.  I like that combo for short range.  Will hit hard and do the trick.

A 219 grain Buffalo Bullet? I've never seen that one. Seems awful light. The ones I shoot are 375 grains.

219 gr. is fine under 150 yrds for deer.  For elk Id go at least 400gr or better

I get great accuracy with the Precision Rifle Dead Center 300 grain bullets pushed with 100 grains of pyrodex.

After sighting in my T/C black diamond with the dead center 300grn sabots with 100grns pyrodex pellets. I tried shooting some 290 grn power belts and I couldn't even get it on paper at 100yrds. I absolutely love the dead center sabots, and highly recomend them to anyone.

Tried darn near every one on the market.  And in both my CVA and mt Thompson  Power belts and Hornady Great Plains get the nod.

With the power belts my Thompson likes the 295's!   The CVA loves the 385 Hornadys.  Have found that I get better accuracy with pryodex rather than TTT.

I've tried the Buffalo bullets and the maxi-balls out of my Lyman and wasn't impressed with their accuracy. Grouping wasn't very good and both were tight and hard to load. Round balls shot really well and I actually hunted with them my first season elk hunting but they didn't have much of an impact on both the deer and the elk that were shot with them. I think the hole was too clean for it to be considered really effective. I've switched over to the Power Belt 405 grain all lead hollow points. These load easy and shoot well. I'm shooting a 2 inch group at 100 yards which is as good as I can do with iron sights I've shot both deer and elk and the damage is nothing less than spectacular, pass through on both with lots of blood and shattered bone. The only one I've recovered was one that got lodged in an elk AFTER shattering the spine. It was flattened out and about the size of a nickle but still intact and probably retained 75% of it's original weight. The 405's are a little hard to find (.54 cal) but 385s are almost everywhere and shoot equally well out of my brothers CVA.

I'm with actionshooter on this one ... I'm shooting 2 inch groups with open sights at 100 with this bullet! When I hunt Oregon I use 300 grn Cva  Buckslayers and get a 3 1/2 inch group.

Hey Bone, I'm curious what mold you are using.  I just ordered a Lee .50 REAL mold, & I'm hoping they will shoot o.k. in my 1:28.  Sure will be a lot cheaper if they do.

I really like a few all lead bullets. All my rifles and calibers are White Rifles open sites most with peep.

 In my Wilson Barreled .504's I like a 510gr my brother casts shoots well 3 shot groups at 100 yards 1 1/4, I also like No Excuse bullets in the 495gr for the .504 shoots very simular to the 510gr, another great shooter is the White Super Slug 600gr bullet 2" groups at 100 yards.

In my Clerke Barreled .504's I like the 460gr Bullshop bullet shoots 1 1/2 in groups at 100 yards.
My .504 Pistol I like the 440 grain White Super Slug.

My .451 cal Whites I like the 460gr White bullet and a 460gr copper gas checked bullet my brother casts. Both bullets will shoot 1" easy at 100 yards.
My .451 pistol I like a 400-423gr bullet

My .410 cal's like 423 grain and 440 grain bullets cast by Moose, will shoot one hole forever.

My .540's like the Noecuse 540gr and the White 750gr super slug. That one hurts though.

I have shot powerbelts with good results.  348gr and 405gr.  I am always amazed at the accuracy.  Although I have never scoped my muzzleloader I believe it would shoot groups inside 2" @100yards with a scope.  My bull this year diddnt make it 40 yards after the shot!

A lot of people do use Powerbelts with good results on elk. But I just can't trust them after I've seen how they "pancake" just on a small blacktail deer, when hitting nothing but a rib and lungs.

Are you now using the jacketed Powerbelts, or still the all-lead? It seems that the jacketed Powerbelts might stay together a little better than the non-jacketed bullets. I have always thought about trying the 444 grain flat point but haven't yet.

I absolutely LOVE the 400 grain hard cast Harvester bullet.    I've probably taken 13-15 elk with them, including 2 big bulls.  The put the hurt on them, with an amazing wound channel and they do not pancake.   

I'm comfy as can be shooting them at anything I hunt with my muzzleloader.

I use Hornady Great Plains 385gr. Perfect for deer, maybe a little too soft for elk.
