how do you do studding for pic of the litter?

I have a registered chocolate lab male 3 years old. In a year or two would like to stud him out. questions are,

1 will he be too old at 5 years

2 how do you promote this? where do you advertise?

3. what to do with AKC as far as the pup goes?

There are folks on here with far more info then I have but I would start by have your dogs hips eyes and elbow certified. I would also have him tested for EIC (exercise induced collapse) and any other genetic testing that is currently being done on labs. If he checks out good or better on those things then it is time to move forward finding a suitable female. Age should not be a problem at 5 or 6. You can advertise locally or better yet get out in the field and find someone who has a female that you also like. As for AKC stuff if both parents are registered the owner of the female has to register the litter and you will get the paper work when you get the pup.

It is important that you make sure your dog is correct for breeding. We all love our dogs and want a pup from them, but make sure the breeding is good for the breed. Part of being a good responsible pet owner is thinking about your actions in the big picture. If you dog has poor joints or eyes or a genetic condition you are just propagating that into the breed  . You never know where the other pups from your breeding will end up, or what the new owners will do with them. Labs are a very popular breed and there are plenty of people breeding just to $ell rather then promote the good of the breed.

It is not that he is more special than any other dog but I do love his build and his demeanor. am hoping that if studded out, I can pick out one pup with at least one if not all of his traits. I am not a breeder and am obviously not doing this for the money as I only want a pup out of the deal. I have never heard of EIC but will look it p as soon as I get done typing this post. As far as having eyes and hips certified, is that something that the vet does? having fun with one dog now as we had to put down the older lab in Octber and was just thinking about the future.

I just had my pup Kalle in for her x-rays to get her hips and elbows certified.  The vet bill was $421   I have an appointment to get her eyes done in April.  That will cost $63.  The hips and elbows only need to be done once.  The eyes are done yearly.  Not all vets are equiped to do this, so you will need to find the right vet in your area.

Beside's the EIC test..  you also want to do the CNM test done...  Also..  are you promoting your dog as a family dog, or a hunter ?..  If a hunter...  you want to try and get some sort of titles on him, just to prove he's trainable, and huntable...  What is his lineage ?

Essentially, (like Gasman,I mean no offense) that woul dbe what you call a backyard breeder.  Folks try to make a quick buck by selling their bitches offspring, or stud fees.  Great place to pick up a family pet.   LOTS of work goes into being a breeder (I breed birds) as does Birdguy.  I grew up on an Appaloosa horse ranch where we bred horses.   You have lots of culling to do, horseshows to show your animal is up to snuff etc. RESEARCH...research...and more RESEARCH.  Regular breeers put in a lot of time AND money in order to be successful.  Thats what drives up the prices of quality animals.  THEN.....back yard breeders pick up the thrifty nickel, knock $100 off and sell it to some poor smuck that doesn't know any better.   Its a good question you asked and also what Gasman asked.

The lab world is probably the toughest to appease your potential buyers. There are people who have been breeding for agility, family, hunting, show and trials for years and years. People spend a lot of money marketing their breedings too.

To prepare your stud for breeding, pull out about $1,000 from your wallet in vet bills. No good breeder will even look at him until you've done all your tests etc. Buying a pup is cheaper than getting a studs health clearances in order. Especially considering a title-less dog will only sell pups for about $300 if he has a decent AKC pedigree.

You'll have to test for doggy sexually transmitted diseases prior to breeding too.....even if you don't think he's ever gotten a piece, the owners of the bitch will demand it if, they're good breeders....

Holy crap. I had no idea there was this much work and $$ involved. I'm not sure that it is worth it to try to breed him. Maybe I'll pick up another pup from where we got him. Sockeye has been the best dog that we have ever owned and would like to see some of those traits in the next one. Although, I would like to let him get a piece as he deserves it Thanks for all the input, I have learned some new issues with Labs that i didn't even know exsisted.

You could contact the breeder you got him from. I'm sure they're aware of his line, and may be interested in breeding him

It's not just labs. All breeds have their diseases that are particular to their gene poole. Not too different from people when you think about it. Certain illness are defined to particular races of humans as well.

If you like him a lot, going back to the breeder is a real good idea either to discuss potential stud work or for pup #2.....

You can always take him to the vet for a hand job and have them freeze his swimmers for future use too....again, pull out the pocket book...

Well, you want the technical terms, you asked for it......

Take the dog to the vet to have him "expressed". I was in coversation with a couple Chessie breeder ladies and they were talking about having their studs expressed and one was talking about doing it herself but, couldn't get the dog interested or finished!? I finally asked what the H*ll it meant. Steph explained with a red face and I went on to give her a bad time about leaving Boone 1/2 finished. Poor guy.

Its picking up but I am using all I am catching so far. I'll PM you when I start getting a surplus. If you find a source with more than you need let me know. I might start buying some if it doesn't pick up a lot more when the days start getting longer and I can train more often.
