Deer Antler Staining?

I know several threads dance around this issue but I was hoping we could consolidate them here...

I have a small 2pt that I bleached (peroxided) up on the antler..so I need to stain em...  I know all the taxi supply books sell stain but Ive heard of people using wood stain...does that work?  why should/shouldnt I use wood stain?  Ive heard of stains made from tree bark and all kinds of things...??  just wonder what people recommend?

Hey dave, the easiest way to fix a touchup like that is with oil paints. I have found it easier to get the color nearly exact and you only have to color the spot that is bleached. Raw umber, and burnt umber is probably the two colors you would use. Thin the paints down to like water color consistentcy and brush on. It may take a bit to get them right .

think 3 inches per side all the way around...perfectly white...my kids painted the hell outta them!
