My dad was in the Navy during WWII. He was on a DE in the Pacific. His boat ran sub screen for the Missouri off Okinawa. He said when they let them big guns off broadside, it would push the whole ship 2 ft. sideways in the water.
Cool pics, thank you for the post.

I remember as a little kid my Dad taking me on board when she was in Bremerton. I think my Mom may have some photos.

This is an actual film made of the surrender ceremony of the Japanese to General Douglas MacArthur in Tokyo Bay in September 1945.

Great post!
Love these ships. These were built back when we didn't take any $hit from anybody, and we fought wars to win. Dug up some on-line pics of the big guns firing. Enjoy!
The USS Wisconsin
USS Missouri
USS Iowa, you can clearly see in this pic that this ship has been pushed sideways, looks like more than a couple of feet.

Guns look neat firing but just wonder what happens when those shells hit the ground and how much they tear up.

My Bad, it was the New Jersey. I didn't realise that there were two that were still operational.

GEZZUS It boggles the mind to try to imagine the amount of recoil energy it takes to push a ship that big the other way....
My National Guard unit had a lot of guys that did their Active Duty time in the Navy, Marines or Air Force. One of them, a former Sailor told me once that on one of the Battle Ships they would fire all the smaller guns the opposite way to off set the recoil of the 16inchers to keep the ship from moving. Thought he was BSing.....maybe not..
