SS Missouri Big guns

Now these are some big guns.9 total  16" guns shoot a 1900lb bomb up to 23 miles,I need me one

My dad was in the Navy during WWII.  He was on a DE in the Pacific.  His boat ran sub screen for the Missouri off Okinawa.  He said when they let them big guns off broadside, it would push the whole ship 2 ft. sideways in the water.

i have been on some of the bigger boats like that, they are sure cool to walk around and see all the stuff they have on them

It was either 68 or 69 at Chulai The Big Mo would lay offshore and lob those 16" shell over our heads.

AWS,the Missouri was decomissioned in 1955 and was not recomissioned until 1984

Guns look neat firing but just wonder what happens when those shells hit the ground and how much they tear up.

GEZZUS It boggles the mind to try to imagine the amount of recoil energy it takes to push a ship that big the other way....

My National Guard unit had a lot of guys that did their Active Duty time in the Navy, Marines or Air Force. One of them, a former Sailor told me once that on one of the Battle Ships they would fire all the smaller guns the opposite way to off set the recoil of the 16inchers to keep the ship from moving. Thought he was BSing.....maybe not..
