First bear was about 50 yards. The second was 374 yards. If I can get closer I will but some areas it isn't possible. My limit would be 400 yards.

first one i ever killed was off a bait and he was directly below my "tree stand" about 12 feet away....I was perched between a couple trees in Colville in October of 1992 stradling two 2x4's and he is still my biggest bear to date...I can still hear him breathing as he stood directly below me...will never forget that moment...sun was setting and shafts of sunlight caught him and the skeeters flying all around me...awesome...thats why I hunt

About 50 yards.  Longest was 100 yards and shortest about 35 yards.

Machias - did you shoot those out of a tree stand?  That's pretty cool...

Four were out of a treestand over bait, three were called in (two with a rifle and one with a bow) and one was shot with my bow while watching an elk wallow.

The 3 footer was back when I was a teenager. We had found a den the year prior. some friends got shots at a big chocolate sow that left the den while elk hunting and we figured she'd be back next year. The next year I hiked in to take a peak inside and see if she was home. The den was just a dug out hole under a dead fall that she had also carved out. Sure enough, when I peeked in, there she was. It took me quite a while to figure out how to shoot and finally I decided a hip shot would have to do. The scary part was reaching in there to get her, It was real dark in there and I couldn't see if she was dead or not. Luckily she was. She was a real old, dry sow close to 300lbs.

Farthest about 150 yards, closest about 15-20'. The closest walked out of the brush right on top of me, was a #400er. 4 bears total for me that I have brought home.
