Teanaway Late Rifle Any Bull Tag

1 of us in our hunting party got drawn for the late teanaway rifle any bull tag. Any good areas? I understand it depends on the snow, we know the area well just not that well in the winter. We usually hunt the clockum area so this will be new area, new time of year. Any suggestions would be helpful thanks.

I thought this site was about giving and recieving information, I have been on here for the past year. Except nobody talks about hunting up the clockum for elk (spike only) or the mission units for deer. Thats the only places that me and my father hunt. Secondly you wanna talk about boot leather, I hike my butt off all season scouting those 2 units. I know every inch of those units. It has taken him 13 years to draw this any bull tag and again as I previously stated I know that unit, but not at the end of December.

Okay again let me explain this, I know the freaking area. The only thing that I dont know is most of the low country is private property, and was wondering if anyone that has had this hunt (since 14 tags were given out last year) needed to get permission? If so I would like to start asking people now. Not in December when the hunt is. Because im sure you are aware as I am that they might be in different places based on the amount of snow that has fallen. Or is there areas that are national forest that they like to hang out down low. I guess if I would have known he would have gotten drawn for this hunt last november then I could have scouted the area for the december hunt. But my crystal ball wasnt working I guess.

Wenatchee Hunter-Dont you love how these people on the coast luv to harass people but yet they live on the coast and most of them drive over here and hunt inmour mtns!! And yes I said our mtns. We are the ones that live here and take jobs for less money so that we can enjoy this area more, but now find ourselves competing for tags with city slickers. Kick up some boot leather i'm sure theres animals on the other side of the cascades!

dreamingbig and bigtex,  What is your problem?  He asked a question. If you don't have any information for him, or do have information but don't want to help, then don't post, simple as that!

From what I know of the area, there should be plenty of elk down low, even without snow. They don't get far from the private fields. There is timber company land adjacent to the private farm fields that can be hunted. I sure wouldn't be spending too much time up high. Good luck on your hunt.

Thanks to everyone, yeah its definately weather depended. Probably will start knocking on a few doors just to get aquainted with some folks. Can't wait should be a fun time for sure, know there are some quality bulls, maybe some tenderloins on christmas would be 1 heck of a present for dad. He deserves it for sure.

my dad had a late cow tag last year and even with the mild winter it was tough finding elk. We did finally fill his tag but it was tough. Alot of private ground and that is where the few elk were....and the feeding stations. A game warden told us that the hunt was developed to pressure the elk to migrate and it must be working....he hadn't seen an elk in two weeks when we talked to him! I would definately knock on some doors in the low country and expect some HELL NO's...at least we got a few. Not like shooting fish in a barrel but if you keep at it and find some good private gound you should be able to find a good bull. Good luck!

Your best shot down low and not on private property will be on American Forest Resource property which is a timberland company which allows you to come on their property. Most of it borders USFS land, it's the same company that runs the Teanaway Campground...

I drew the late muzzy tag.  P.M. me your contact info.  I'll be doing a lot scouting and after I fill my tag or season is over, I would have no problem pointing someone to an area.  My hunt is the 9th-17th, and yours starts the day after mine ends.  I'm hoping someone with an archery tag will do the same for me.  Is your buddy going to be looking for a trophy, mature bull or anything with antlers?  I'll be trophy hunting looking for the monarch that doesn't hang out on private land.

Hey wenhunter and 300wsm...congrats!

I drew the Teanaway late archery and will be spending lots of time scouting and setting up game cams. No problem sharing what I find. After reading through years of posts is seems weather is a big factor. Snow and cold...the Bulls are grouped up along the river and Cle Elum ridge on mostly private ground with some really big satalite bulls staying up high year round-living on buckbrush during the winter-especially in the lakes area. I spent 10 hours door knocking last week with little luck-first question...you from Cle Elum? Can't blame em! It doesn't seem like many Bulls are being seen on accessible public land when the pressure starts so I am going to focus away from early season haunts and look for escape routes leading into prime (private) areas. Lets stay in touch.

WenHunter, you can give these guys a hard time when they are looking for info when they draw a Mission buck tag or a Colockum Elk tag.  The late rifle tag is a very good one, not as good as the one sept tag, but it has a potential for a trophy bull.  In my opinon and from what ive seen GMU 335 holds some of the biggest bulls in the state, the only other units that are close are in the Blues.   Yes, some of the bulls are on private but many migrate East over HWY 97, but there are still some giants that winter on public land.   Knock on some doors early and tell them that you have a special elk permit and not just a general tag. I know several land owners that might let a guy on only with a permit tag. I say screw the private land and only keep a few land owners in mind only if it dumps snow. concentrate on public land because theres and alot of it along with good access.

I would concentrate my scouting b/w hwy 97 and teanaway rd.  There should be a good shooter 350+ hanging out there late season.  I know that is a broad area but after you do some scouting you will see some good areas to check for late  Keep in mind that some of those big bulls never come down low even in bad snow years. GOOD LUCK and be prepared to shoot across a canyon

6X6, Glad to see someone with the archery tag.  CSOutfitters said almost exactly what I was thinking.  I'm going to try and stay away from the private land with the exception of a couple contacts I have.  Lets keep in touch and maybe compair some notes on our scouting.  I'll be spending the weekend in Cle Elum in a couple weeks and want to check out the higher areas, maybe set up a game cam.  I'll PM you and Wenhunter my contact info.  A little team work may make us all successful!

Wenhunter, PM me and I will set you up, I know several of the land owners and have exclusive permissions on many ranches. The weather plays into the hunt but if you know where they go and who owns the ground it just makes it easier to find the one you want

Sounds good. Lets keep in touch, hopefully we can find a few that stay put once the pressure starts! I did manage to get permission on a couple small private pieces after another day of door knocking. This is going to be a special hunt for me...haven't been back to 335 since Muzzy with my Dad, the trip we found out he had cancer. We hunted the area for many years, as he had with his Dad and I went to archery after he died, haven't had the heart to go back and haven't got an elk with the bow yet. It's time to get it done and take care of some unfinished wishes (ashes) while I'm up there...been holding out for this tag.

I drew the early rifle tag last year, which is a good time to "see whats there".  My hunt was totally different than yours will be, but If I had the late tag I would have access to a snowmobile.  There is quite a bit of ground that will be closed off for driving that you can ride snowmobiles on to get to where you want to hunt.  Don't be fooled, the elk are there.  I spent almost every weekend scouting last year and saw few bulls until the rut neared.  Then the switch came on.  I guarantee there are bulls on the public ground.  I went over in December last year just to see some bulls and there were very few on private property.  It was a mild winter, but even with a heavy one, most of the private ground borders timber company land.  I didnt shoot the biggest bull, but i did see some brutes scouting.  I just couldnt restrain myself. I know my tag was a lot different but feel free to p.m. me if you need.

Spent yesterday out again and finally scored private permission on a big piece that I am setting cams and lick up on next week...looking forward to starting scouting. Does anyone know the breakdown for Arch/Muzz/Rifle 335 tag holders last year. I cant find specific info but doing backwards math from the harvest reports it looks like Rifle 8 of 11 and all 6 pts, archery 3 of 11 1 spike and 2-5 points and Muzzy 0'fer?? Am I reading this right or is my idiot light on!

Very late snow or just the ability to close the gap at 2500fps!?! Wenhunter I have a late cow for teanaway and I live right in Cle Elum,I know a lot of areas that aren't private to find the elk but if you can gain access to a few private spots down low you will have it made.If your gonna be over I would get familiar with the lower areas first since your hunt wont be that high.

Could be a lot of reasons.  Rifle guys obviously have an advantage with range.  Could be some muzzy guys held out.  Then there is always the possibility that some guys didn't tell the truth on their report.

Scouting this way is odd...but I'm getting stoked! I have spent more time this year knocking on doors than I have in the field. I've fixed fences, irrigation lines and smoked salmon even for the many who said "No". One of the great benefits is the fantastic people I have met, their stories of generations past and pictures of their long gone relatives. I dont know if I will ultimately put the fork in a big bull this year...but it will go down as one of the most rewarding seasons ever.
