Reloading for the 7-08
« on: July 12, 2010, 09:08:06 AM »
I am going to reload a bunch of rounds for a buddy. His daughter is shooting the 7-08. Anyone got a proven load? I already have a full box of partitions, 150 grainers, that I am not using myself and thought I'd use for these....

Whatchya think?

you can never go wrong with the partions :twocents: it depends what she will be using the loads for deer elk etc i really like the 140 grain combined technology bullets in both my 7mm-08 my guns love them one is a rifle and one is a bolt action handgun. they are great for deer sized game and shoot perfect less then 1" and my rifle i have 2 groups think one is .40 and .30 with them they are great if she is just hunting deer you might check them out. i got the charge info if you decide to try them out that works best 4 me.

I may load her some 140's next time, but for now I'll load up these 150's I have on hand.

You can throw the load data down though and I will write it in my journal for future knowledge!

Thanks

Look at 120 grain Barnes TSX, my Remmy likes a load of 97% of max of IMR 4064.  PM me for more info...at work so dont have COL to hand.

Beat me to it...maybe the new best .284 bullet on the market... try Varget or H414

I am running 140 gr. Ballistic Tips over Win. 760.  It is a very accurate round.  It will knock a deer flat as well.

I will consider the lighter bullets... not wanting to spend anything right now and have them 150 partitions... do any of  you see any negatives with this 150 grain load? It will be for 200 yard or less shots on almost strictly deer....

+1 on the 150's inside 200 yds. Specially if you got them on the shelf  8). Mine likes IMR 4064. I think the 7-08 is one of the most under rated chambering of modern firearms ( IMHO ).

Under 200 yards, those partitions will even take elk, if you do your part.  Nothing wrong with that bullet at all.

I am fairly fascinated with this little cartridge myself. I'm reloading these for a buddies daughter, she killed 1 buck and 4 does with it last year! I was looking for one for my 10 yr old daughter, but I stumbled on a 243 quicker and ended up with it. I may still pick up the 7-08 for her for later....

Thanks all! I've got some 4064 and an old can of BL-C(2)  (I think thats what it is...inherited it...never even seen it before) that apparently (according to a couple manuals I have) will work in this cartridge.

A 243 can grow up into a 7-08 later.
Great cartridge.

Yip...

Well, I talked to the girls dad some today and we decided to just buy some new bullets! So, I picked up some 140 Grain Barnes Triple Shocks... mixed with some IMR 4064 it ought to be a bad ass little combo.... Reloading for him too, Barnes 168 Gr. TSX pushed out of the 06' with some 4831!

they'll be happy!

(I shoot the TSX's exclusively for about 5-6 years now and love them..)

Look at a 140 Nosler accubond with some RL-19 or IMR 4350. Should be tons of good loads. I dont figure the 7mm-08 will be to picky.

I've pretty much gone exclusively to 140 Sierra Pro-Hunters over Varget.

Let me know what happens with your reload.  I picked up a 7mm-08 a few minutes ago and I'm excited to get loading.  I have RL15, RL19, IMR4064, H414, H4895, H4350 and Varget on hand.  I'm probably going to shoot 120 TTSX or 140 Ballistic Tips.  I like expansion!

I just picked up some 140gr Nosler AccuBonds to try. Most of the loads in my Nosler book for 7mm-08 are compressed loads. I've heard bad things about compressed loads, you should keep your loads below 90%.

I've never had any issues with compressed loads. Just depends what shoots the best in your rifle.  I was shooting 140 gr Hornady Interlocks over IMR4064 that chrono'd at 3000 fps out of my 7-08.  I found too many exploded bullets with deer so I switched to Nosler Accubonds and fixed that problem.  Drops them in their tracks.
