Now that we know where everyone doesn't want someone to hunt......

I'd say Douglas County for mule deer, and probably over in Almota/Steptoe

You're right there Bone.   I cut my teeth chasing those dinky mule deer in that country.   The 24-29" bucks are easy to come by, it's those 30"+ I can't seem to knock down?   :chuckle:
They'd have to live in a cave to survive general rifle along that section of the breaks.  :chuckle:

Freshman year we got some access along the breaks and went out scouting in August-September, we'd see 15-20 bucks a day. Quite the eye opener for a couple blacktail brush hunters. We figured we had 'em in the bag on opening day of rifle season, until we showed up at our secret squirrel spot opening morning....yeah wasn't so secret.  :(    :hunt2: ww3. Orange everywhere. I should have switched to archery back then. In the 4 years I was over at Pullman  I only saw 2 muley's that could push high 20" and 1 nice whitetail that my lab tried to tackle in some cattails  :chuckle:

I'd say 142 has the least trophy potential.  Bucks rarely get past their first year with a 3rd point.  Lots of spindly racks too.

Guesss you shot the last 2 deer in that unit!!!

Nice one!  :) Seen a few that size in the 142. My huntin' buddy got one that big back in '03, sneaky sob that whitetail was. Took us 3 tries to get him.
I never got one that big in the 142 myself. 3x3 and a 3x4. We were more successful at tagging big whitetails in gmu 166.
The whitetail that my lab kicked up in the 142 was a huge freakin 6x7 non-typical. Of all places, we found him on some green sign crp land. I've no idea how he lived long enough to get that big in the 142. Must of had a big rock to crawl under.  :chuckle:

That is why the second weekend of rifle is so good to hunt for WT.  The bird hunters (dogs) are the only ones who can get those big whiteys up and vulnerable.

 :kneel:

That's about as nice of a deer as I've ever seen come out of that unit.  Are you hunting breaks, or farther north from the river?  I've been hunting private property, but its not that private if you ask the owner.  Are you on private or public land?

All I ever see out there are lots of does and forkies.  I've tried beating the bottoms of the canyons and I've tried hunting up higher and glassing the hillsides.  I saw a 5x5 whitetail two years ago, but the racks were very narrow and the antlers very thin.  I know he was taken last fall.

We've taken a few deer in the 150 - 175" class.

We don't really have a lot of big deer, but there are always a few.   With the area being 99% private, it is hard for "outsiders" to really know what is there.   Like I have said before, the best ground is closed-up tight.   Every year I can take mule deer from 24"-28" and whitetail to 150" or so.    The biggest mule deer I have seen is probably in the high 170's and I have seen a lot of high 160's whitetail.    I don't think I have ever seen a WT that would net B&C All-time.    I've seen 30"+ bucks, but not very many.  My dad and I have both shot 29" bucks, and a few around 27",  a few more in the 23-25" range.   Again, highest scoring about 178" gross.
