Magnus 2 Blade Penetration Test
«
on:

So In this test, I was shooting a 125g magnus standard 2 blade. Out of my 57lb Martin Hunter recurve. Total arrow weight was 590 grains.
I did two tests, the first clip I intended to imitate a shoulder shot. Material used was 5 ply half inch ply wood. The arrow Did not completely break through, the broadhead ended up sticking just over an inch out of the wood. (I expected results similar to this)
Second clip, I intended to imitate a broadside shot with ribs. Material was quarter inch thick solid wood molding/edging. The broadhead broke through the wood, and penetrated about 11 inches into the target.
Over all. I am not 100% impressed with the penetration. Do you guys think this is sufficient for taking elk? (no shoulder shots obviously.) Keep in mind the broadhead was
not
razor sharp. I shot it into wood a few times before I took the videos.
However, I was impressed with the integrity of the broadhead. After a good 10-11 shot through various pieces of wood, the broadhead was still in very good shape. No bending. With a little sharpening, the blades would be as good as new!

Pretty decent. I stuck one (not on purpose) through the shoulder blade of my last big bull and had enough to get one lung. They are VERY solid heads and can take a beating. I was looking for one of my shots last night and found two old arrows out in the scruff with heads intact, one from last year and one from the year before and they look damn near perfect. Hit it with a stone and they'd be good to go.

Not an elk but this critter was shot with one magnus stinger and one magnus II. The magnus II is the one in the photo. I would get within 25 yards and make an accurate shot.

That setup will do you JUST FINE RC.... period. Just get the broadhead razor sharp. That head has killed too many elk and deer to even think about it not being sufficient. And your arrow weight is fantastic...

Given that these Magnus heads penatrate better than most of the other popular elk heads, why doesn't everyone use them (myself included)? There must be a reason....

A sidenote..... I killed 3 muley bucks and an elk with the same arrow and head. Finally lost it this fall with a pass through into some of that fine mountain shale. (buried it I guess.)

Recurve Elk, I think it would be totally sufficient, but also goes to show that even with heavy arrows, and a 2 blade, it is tough to penetrate bone, further showing that shot placement is always key. I met a guy that gets an elk almost every year, shooting a 47lb recurve and a 600 grain arrow w/2 blade of some sort. He says he just waits till they are close (usually within 10 yards). I don't know how he does it (he says he doesn't call them, just sneaks into their paths and waits in the brush). I believe his tactics work for him, he appears to be not in the best shape, so the waiting tactics make sense for him.
After I get a few under the belt with the compound, I'm switching to my recurve. I get them close enough each year, but never manage to get a shot off with the compound, too complicated some times!!!
7 more weeks till the season, yes!!!!

No problem sir! I shoot a 56# pull on a longbow with 495grn arrows with a 3-blade Magnus SnufferSS in 125grn. A 3-blade generally offers a bit more resistance but when razor sharp will penetrate with little issues, I hand sharpen every head before use, you'll want to do the same! Here's some results with this setup!

This bull was taken with a 2 blade with bleeders Zephyr Sirocco head, similar to the magnus head you tested, so yes you will do just fine with your "tuned" setup!
