Hey Pope, how's this for sharpness?
« on: March 06, 2008, 05:51:14 PM »
Pope,

Here's one with the 100-400 at 5.6 1/800 at 400mm.  He was only 20-25 feet away so the DOF is pretty shallow.  The focul point was the corner of his left eye.  No PP with this at all, just converted and saved to a jpeg and resized.

I haven't had much of a chance to play with this lense, hopefully this weekend.

That looks really good to me.  One thing I look for in a lens to determine sharpness is the hair.  If you can see the individual hairs and they are defined then it's a sharp lens.  Here is a full size crop the same size as your photo with no PP at all.  It was shot with the 100-400 f4-f5.6 IS L.  I changed the white balance is all.  It was shot at f5.6 and 1/180th of a second for exposure at 390mm and ISO 400.  This was actually the sharpest shot I got with this lens and I attribute some of that to the use of flash on this shot.  See how the hairs on the face are not distinctive like the ones on your dog?

Also, one of the downsides to this lens can be it's "bokeh"...but look at the out of focus areas behind your dog.  They are nice and creamy with good bokeh.  Have fun with the lens.

Shawn

Looks great to me.  I'd made it vertical for some reason, but both great pics.

Nice pics guys, this was shot with the same lens GamblinGuy, but at about 100 yards.
