carry gun for the wife?
« on: October 06, 2010, 08:22:43 PM »
I'm thinking about buying my wife a pistol for x-mas.  I was thinking maybe a 38 or should I get her a .357 and let her shoot 38 out of it.  I was thinking that because I Have a .357 we could swap ammunition.  Any suggestions or thoughts.

My wife loves her Ruger LCP. Perfect gun for her to keep in her purse or pants pocket.

Good Idea! I love my 38 revolver and have packed it for 29 years. It has a short barrel "3 inch" and nobody ever notices it's on me 8).I also have a beretta storm but I'm more comfortable shooting the 38 because the storm has the slide thing to jack a shell into it and it's hard to do.  :chuckle:

My wife doesn't like fiddling with slide locks and everything regarding semi autos and the magazine. Her intent is to squeeze the trigger right away and kill the perpetrator. The single and double action revolver is her choice. She is confident that the first shot will be well placed by setting the hammer back. Although I can completely understand why someone would want a double action only.

S&W 640. Heavier than the aluminum Airweight series. Very reliable, low maintenance.

Whatever you choose, needs to be something SHE likes and will carry without complaint.

Never could get my wife to carry a semi-auto. She has carried a Taurus 85 and now carries a Colt Cobra 38spl. Deadly with it!

I am not a firearms instructor, but I spend a lot of time at the range, and as RO calling the line for our Bullseye competition, I have seen enough to always recommend a rimfire gun to practice with, and a 38spl in a snubby revolver for most women to carry. No safety to worry about. Just point and pull the trigger. She has practiced with light loads, but there's +P's in there for self defense.

Take her to the range with you and rent a few guns and share them with her so you get to see what she likes and shoots well.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

What Bean Counter said. That is the exact same pistol that my wife carries. S&W Model 640 2 1/8in bbl. It's hammerless and I put some "Crimson Trace" laser grips on it for her. She LOVES it. As Mr. T used to say, "I pity the fool" that try's to jack her when she's carrying it.

A couple of weeks ago My mom bought a little smith and Wesson guardian in 380. Nice, small little pistol and with the laser my mom shot better then I expected. The guardian is small and light enough to put in a coat pocket. They cost less then $500. at cabelas.
I might pick up the smith and Wesson guardian, hammerless revolver in 38 special to play with for a while, it will shoot the +P loads and has a laser on it and is about the same price as the 380 my mom bought.
