Under Armed
« on: October 21, 2010, 05:20:15 PM »
So I take my dad out deer hunting today and we spot a couple blue grouse about 100 yds down a side road.  We both get out our shotguns and start walking down the road.  I hear a noise in the brush up ahead and to the left, and a bruiser of a bear takes off and runs down the road away from us at aboout 30 yds and scares the grouse.  Since I'm carrying my shot gun, I run back to the truck and get my 300 wsm and take off into the timber where the bear jumped off the road.  You guessed it, no bear to be found.  O well, always cool to see a bear.  The bright side is I still have a bear tag in my pocket.

20 g. single shot with 7 1/2 shot not the ideal bear gun.  I liked my chances of running to the truck to get my wsm better.

Couple of 20ga slugs in your pocket would have kept you from needing to run back to the truck.

I always carry a few slugs when we bird hunt in case we see a coyote. Had to use them one time on a cougar.

I agree. even if you don't have a tag. Good to have just in case a predator gets to close  :mgun2:

 :yeah:

Just be careful if there is a modern firearm deer or elk season open and you don't have a valid bear or cougar tag.

From the hunting regs:
"10. Hunting during modern firearm deer or elk seasons:
You may not hunt wildlife during any modern
firearm deer or elk season, with any firearm
24 caliber or larger or containing slugs or
buckshot for big game, unless you have a valid
license, permit and tag for one of the following:
deer, elk, black bear, cougar, mountain goat,
bighorn sheep, or moose."

I'm not sure you would have a need for the slugs if you didn't have one of those tags  8)
