4 out of 4 in 2 days (pic heavy)
« on: October 24, 2010, 08:13:53 PM »
Well I've been busy and haven't had a chance to post these yet.  I don't have enough time right now to tell all of the stories so I will be brief tonight and fill in the rest tomorrow.  At least for now I can tell you that we got 3 of the bucks on opening day and the last one was shot on the 2nd day, but not recovered until the 3rd day morning.  It was a really good year for us, since we have never, all tagged out.  Normally we are about 50% or so.  It was a hunt that I will never forget with lots of firsts, which I will get more into tomorrow.  Here are the pics.

Uhhh no butt out tool for me.  I do it the old fashioned way.   I think I would find it a little disturbing shoving that thing up the ole' A-hole....I don't know, it's kinda just wierd to me I guess.  It must work though. Never seen it done before or seen anyone own one.

Congrats.  That's a good even mixed bag of muleys and whitetails.   It's a lot of fun hunting in areas that have both.

Addicted--No, the whitey with the blown out leg was recovered the same day.  That was his first shot that he made, next one was a heart shot.

So here is the rest of the story.
Day#1/Buck #1
Me, my brother-n-law, father-n-law, and his cousin were all geared up for a hopefully good morning hunt.  The temperature was below freezing where we were camped when we got up so all we had was some coffee and a lot of adrenaline to keep up going before we headed out to our spot.  So, we take off and soon we approach our drop off for me and the brother-n-law at the top of a draw loaded with CRP and a nice group of apple trees towards the top, where we normally see some nice deer.  So as me and him slowly start walking down this hill, my father-n-law and his cousin are heading down to hit up the other side of this canyon just adjacent to the hill we are on.  We immediately start shuffling the deer around but it was still before legal shooting time so we just had to wait it out a little longer.  They finally reached there area accross the canyon and it wasnt but a half hour before they are pushing deer around also.  Then I here a single shot go off accross the way and then I get the radio call....deer down he says.  So its off to a great start with my father-n-law layin the smack down on a very cool looking 5x5 muley.  3 on one side with 2 eyeguards and the other side is a 3 with a 2 in drop tine kicker and a single eyeguard.  He was happy as hell.
Day#1/Buck#2
As me and the brother-n-law keep an eye out for some more bucks, one whitetail jumps out near him.  He sees that its legal so he fires off his first shot.  He thought he had hit him but he was running so he wasn't sure. The buck started taking off towards me so he called me on the radio to let me know.  That buck never made it towards me and turned around.  In the mean time he was pissed off that he had missed a descent buck.  So out comes this buck again towards him and he puts a final shot in the heart and down he goes.  4x3 Buck down again.  So I head down the hill to go get the quad but I still needed to go get the father in laws, so I go take care of the first one first.  That takes about an hour or more.  In the mean time, my brother-n-law is impatiently waiting for me to come up and get him and his buck.  Finally I arrived and load up the quad with his buck on the front and him on the back.  As we get towards the bottom we come accross some pretty rough terrain.  We ended up flipping my brand new grizzly 550 and we both went flyin.  Luckily the quad only suffered a slightly bent luggage rack and we only suffered some small bruises.  Flipped it back over with the deer still intact, and continued down to the truck....laughing the whole way cause of what just happened.

Day#1/Buck#3
As we left my moms house after visiting her for lunch, it was time for me to start my evening hunt.  So we head out to the same hillside that my father-n-law got his earlier.  As we were approaching my drop off area we cruise around the corner on this old farmers road between to plowed wheat fields, this big old buck started running away from us.  All I could see was the big rack.  He was on the right side of the road and we couldn't hunt there.  But little did that buck know that we could hunt the left side and thats where he headed to.  He went about 200 yards and stopped broadside in the middle of the field.  I get out and take a shot.....missed, he moved a little and I took another shot and hit him in the rear quarter near his spine.  His ass end went straight down but he tried his hardest to move but he just couldn't.  I continued to shoot a couple more round to make sure he was dead.  I didn't need him suffering.  I ended up dropping him with another shot just above the heart.  Nice wide 4x4.  End of story for him....but not me.  As we drag him out of there, cause I didn't want to gut him there in the field and get the meat all dirty, we get closer to the pickup where there is 2 guys waiting there for me.  They ask me...do you have permission to hunt here, and I said yes I do.  This land is farmed by a guy but is only partially owned by him and the rest is public.  I asked the guy, why...do you have a problem.  He says, well if its not public and you just tresspassed, than YOU JUST SHOT MY DEER.  I said WHAT, I don't see know name tag on that deer saying it belongs to you.  He ended up calling somebody down to talk with up but it was all good and they went on there way.  It was kind of a debby downer at the time cause I was all excited about shooting this nice buck and some dude was trying to report us for shooting his buck.  Anyways, that's that for the first day.  Day 1 was a great day for us.

Day#2/Buck#4

So one more tag to fill and its for my father-n-laws cousin.   He has only been hunting a few times and has never had a chance to shoot one since he is disabled.  So day 2 there wasnt to much going on.  A lot of deer got pushed around from all the surrounding gunfire and hunters so the deer was few and far between.  So Sunday evening came around and we started to head back to camp.  As we were coming around the corner we spotted a small group of deer just below those same apple trees that we normally see deer at.  We see a nice legal whitetail standing there.  Cousin gets out and walks off the road and down a ways.  He lays against the fence and lets one go...the deer moves a little and off goes another shot.  I hear the connection from the second one.  It was getting dark quick and we searched the hill side but between the light and the tall CRP grass, it was too hard to see, so we backed out until the morning.  Next day, we started our search and found the 5x4 buck laying there with the largest blood trail I have ever seen.  It was about a foot wide by about 20 yards long.  I have never seen such a happier person than his cousin after recovering that deer.  It was a great time and one that I will never forget.  Thanks to my family for always taking care of things and the children while I'm away hunting  Come on 2011.
