First muzzleloader deer
« on: November 21, 2010, 06:01:54 PM »
This is a downer. :(  My cousin, 400out, took me out deer hungting yesterday.  I took a shot at three pointer, we both heard the THWOP.  He walked up the hill slowly, looked like he was gonna bed down.  When we made it to the top of the hill, he was on a dead run jumping over a fence, crossing a road, and jumping another fence. :'(  He then went down a deep draw.  We checked the road where he crossed and could not see any blood.  We looked around and tried to track him but couldn't find any sign. :dunno: This was all about 3:30 4:00.  We went back today and drove the road that he crossed.  Today I had Transka tag along.  When we got to the spot he crossed, we got out of the truck and glassed towards the bottom of the draw.  We could see crows flying around and two coyotes took off.  Bad feeling.  We went down the hill to see what they were on, and there was a deer carcass.  >:(  Nothing but bones and fur.  Glad I found it, but pissed that I did not get to bring any meat home.  Coyotes were aparently slightly hungry last night.  So I tagged my first muzzleloader deer but didn't get to put any backstrap on the bar BQ.

Nice buck.  Bum deal, but on a positive note , at least the pack out was light.   :)  Its amazing how fast the coyotes can clean up a deer.
I've hunted almost everyday of my life, the rest have been wasted.

I applaud you for going back and tagging that buck, some would have just continued hunting and forgotten about it. Congrats.

good on ya for tagging him. not everyone woulda done that. I too have tagged out and not recovered my animal. lake wenatchee area about 15 years ago I shot a HUGE 4x4 and never found him. cut the tag and went home the next day. at least you have yours for a euro mount or talk to the taxi and see if they can use another cape for ya. nice deer by the way especially for your first muzzy deer.

that sucks! glad you got your buck. + good for you, to tag it.

butcher98951: you are 100% incorrect, and to call bull on the story is pretty crappy the guy did the right thing and notched his tag. i know the area that they were hunting very well. i have seen the yotes clean up a deer in less then 12hrs. they are hungry and will gorge themselves on meat.

Someone poached a mature cow elk near my house.  I watched the coyotes gold and bald eagles, magpies devour it from my house with with my spotting scope.
All meat was gone in 2 days

Dude this hunt was one of the best I have been on and to guide you on yor first muzzy buck and the challange of getting that close to them in open gound was fun I think in the coming ear it will make me even a better hunter! I feel real bad that you didn't get any meat out of the deal, I know dep inside for sure that I am not a horn hunter because even with a nice rack in my hands I didn't feel great about the deal! but there really wasn't more we could have done, of course hind sight is 20/20 but I think we played it right :) if we would have pressed even harder yesterday who knows where he might have ended up  :dunno: with a unsure hit it is alway best to get the greneral area and wait let him blead out! Sorry man but atleast we are even you packed one out for me and I packed one out for you!

As for you butcher you can think what you want and call bs on what you want but don't ever call bs on my hunting tactics  :bdid: Did you think we went down a canyon and tag someone elses deer that had no meat on its bones for a set of horns!  :stfu:

Good for you.  You did all you could do.

Assuming it was a responsible shot, no matter what weapon it just proves how vital a "vital" shot is.  Nearly everybody has been there.  You were using a Muzzleloader so I'm going to guess the distance wasn't that far?  It's all relative of course.

I have been troubled the last few years as I've seen these high powered rifles outfitted with scopes that are made for making ridiculous, long range shots.  What's the fun in that?  You didn't fool the animal, when a deer sees you from 500+ yards I think they should feel safe.  There's even videos out now that highlight and teach this stuff.  I think anything beyond 300yds is wrong.

Personally, watching some fat guy climb out of a truck, set up his bipods on the hood of his truck, look at his chart, dial up his scope, pull the trigger and than give his fatter buddy a high five is a blackeye on hunting.  These videos only show kill shots.  Think of the misses or near misses that take off legs, etc.  You think that kind of hunter is going to track his animal down?

Sorry for the rant.  Don't listen to some of these guys, sorry about the meat...you tried.

Shot was maybe 75 yrds.  Felt pretty comfortable with the shot. I am not about the long shots either.  Not to worried about the negative.  I know and so does 400out.  I

What an awesome post.  I agree there are a lot of skinny pieces o shat out there. They're just not as lazy.  :peep:  Just kidding I couldn't resist.

Back to the original topic. What a heartbreak. Thats weird for the coyotes to hit that fast, they really worked it over. What a bummer.

Good on ya for sticking it out and finding your buck. To bad the coyotes got him before you could. You did the right thing by notching your tag. Just out of curiosity what gun/bullet/powder combo where you shooting?

Makes for a light pack out! Those hills looks steep. Too bad on the no meat thing. That is amazing that it could be stripped that fast. Would like to see a video of that.

On the bright side, a coyote probably ate the bullet and will die of lead poisoning........... :)

Another question for you. Do you feel that you made a good hit on then deer. How comfortable are you with the gun? I'm just wondering if you where using a different bullet do you think it would of changed the outcome? Do you think the bullet performance had anything to do with it?

I've killed  5 bucks with the same bullet/powder combo none of them took another step after they were hit, I think the bullet he is using is fine, he probably just didn't make a perfect shot, sh$t happens, to all of us.  Good for you on not giving up and tagging your animal.

Another question for you. Do you feel that you made a good hit on then deer. How comfortable are you with the gun? I'm just wondering if you where using a different bullet do you think it would of changed the outcome? Do you think the bullet performance had anything to do with it?
Don't know if a different bullet would have done different. I am comfortable at the range I shot him at.  We looked at the hide, what was left, and did find a hole that looked to be a gut shot.  The only thing I can think of is that I pulled a bit.

I've seen two deer stripped like that in under 3 hours and 7 hours respectively.  I passed an intact roadkill adult doe one spring along Highway 2 in Douglas County at around 4am.  On my return trip at 11am, there were one coyote (that I saw) and at least 75 ravens, she was slicked as clean as that one.  One March I drove up Oklahoma Gulch and saw an emaciated fawn that was so weak, it couldn't hold its head up.  Less than 3 hours later, there were 3 eagles and a magpies on the remains, and when I walked up to look the poo told the tale of at least one coyote.  All of the muscle tissue and guts, except the rumen and intestines had already been consumed.

I've also seen a carcass sit for days in the wide open and never get touched until the maggots turned it into a bone pile.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

I applaud you for going back and tagging that buck, some would have just continued hunting and forgotten about it. Congrats.

I agree 1000%. Most (perhaps myself included  :dunno:), would NOT have tagged this animal. Great 3 point though.

I had what we thought was a badger, (possible wolverine?) take my muley, bury half of it, and eat both hams, and tenderloins out if in, just in one night.  I shot it at dark, 1 mile from camp, came back at daybreak with my dad and friend, could barely find the deer, until I saw it's head sticking out of the ground.  Was really freaky!  It also pissed all over it, stunk bad!

It is amazing how fast coyotes get on a kill. I have seen them on gut piles in under an hour! Congrats on a nice buck, sorry you wont have a full freezer!
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

Thanks everybody for your comments.  It was good hearing that I wasn't the only one that it has happened too.  Still makes me sick that I lost the meat.  And to Butcher, nothing to say to you.
