not even close. The 338 fed is nearly identical to the 308 and 300 savage.

Take a 308 and neck it up to 338. Thats the idea of it.

what about the 260 remington?

and would a 338 fed be a good round for high country hunting? or should i stick with something a little smaller and flatter shooting?

the rifle im buying is a kimber 84m montana

it comes in

243. win
257. rob
260. rem
7mm -08 rem
308. win
338. fed

out of those calibers which would be the best for the high country? not concerning bear encounters of course. i have my revolver for those  :IBCOOL:

If that is all they offer in the model you want I would go for the 7mm-08.

I have a Tikka in 338 fed. I bought it for a short to medium range elk round. I haven't fully explored the potential for it yet but the load that I have sorta settled on works just fine out to 300 yds.

if that was all that was offered, i would take the 308. the others cant shoot 180-200 grain bullets.,not counting the 338fed.. personally i think the 338 fed is a *censored*. im tired of the "lets create a new cartridge" game.... 308 ammo is cheap, you can get it everywhere, and its proven.

you're spending that kind of money for a rifle for 1 season and 1 hunt?
damn...wish i had your money.  ;)
kimber, right? not kimda.

i think the next deer specific rifle i buy will be a 257 bob.

yeah im not extremely happy with what this rifle has to offer as far as calibers. im a huge 257 roberts fan though, but i think im gonna go with something a little bigger either 308 or 7mm-08.

idk though yet...i may go with the kimber 8400 instead of the 84m. either way im getting the montana model sence its the lightest in its group of models.

i just want the 84m montana sence its lighter then all the others 84m models, and over a pound lighter then any of the 8400 models.

i can go back with my weatherby mark v ultra lighwieght or remington 700 lss choices and get a different round.

but again the remmy is 1+lb heavier then the kimber 84m montana

and the weatheryby is just way more then i wanna spend, although i dont have a problem spending that money on a rifle im gonna be hiking 20 miles in a day with.

money is no object for this new toy, and i want to make sure i get exactly what i want. that goes for wieght, style, caliber, feel, optics...etc. etc. etc.

i dont reload at all...and i dont have the time to get custom work done. so what ever rifle i get will be a factory model, and all ammo will be factory loads UNless its a caliber my buddie loads.

lol typing fast isnt my best skill

um well its specificly gonna be used for the high country. sure it will be a general season rifle as well. but my main focus is losing wieght sence its gonna be on my shoulder ALOT. i already hike more then most people during the general season.

and trust me i dont have that kinda money. but im not gonna skip out on what i want this time. there has been to many times i have baught a firearm just because i "could" and didnt like it.

this is the first time i am actually researching different rifles, and calibers, trying to get exactly what i want. that way im not buying a rifle and not liking it and selling it for half of what i payed for after only putting 20 rounds through it and never hunting with it.
