Stinky boots

Hey, so last season, I don't know what happened. I either got water in my boots or I sweet a lot. Anyway, my boots smell musty like, Gf gives me crap about me feet stinking. I tell her its not the feet, its the boots! and she just  at me. LOL  And I don't know how to get rid of it. I thought I gave them ample time to dry out. But maybe it wasn't enough? Anyway, any one else have this problem?

Yeah. Had the same problem. Walking through berry bushes in the rain without gaitors on while bear hunting. Got back to camp and literally poured a cup of water out of my boots. After trying a couple different methods of recovering them I just gave up. I tried several different powders and sprays but it seemed nothing would penetrate down into the padding to stop the growth of bacteria.

boot dryers can save a good pair of boots or waders.  They also sell ones that you can plug into your cigarrete lighter if you are close to your truck anyway while you are at camp.  Musty smells are from moisture so you gotta get rid of it.  If I remember right, dr. scholls sells comfort insoles that get rid of odor if you just have stanky feet

Get a good heater-dryer for boots, and a spray to remove odor (don't know the name brand).
If you don't have a dryer stuff boots with news paper BUT remove daily and re stuff with dry paper. Works well unless you forget and leave them in, then you are in real trouble. I also have used Tinactin foot spray. It is a good odor eater and it kills fungus growth in boots.

Try putting new coffee grounds into cut off woman's nylons and tie off. Put these in your boots and that should take care of the problem.

I've read, but haven't tried, the freezer method. Put them in an airtight ziplock bag and throw 'em in the freezer. The cold is supposed to kill the mildew. 

If that didn't work, maybe a mild bleach solution? 

I hope this is a prevention lesson to the rest of us. If you're staying at a hotel and can bring your boot dryer, bring it! If you're camping, bring lots of newspaper. Put paper in the first thing you do when you get back for the night.. and change 'the paper out at least once before bed.

Thanks everyone! I will give it a try. I have inserts but ad the end of the day I pulled them out to air out. I even remembered to put hand warmers in them a couple times. Guess I didn't get out all the wet. Thanks!

I've never had stinky feet until this year.  New pair of chinese made boots and ewww.  These did not get wet on the inside except possibly from sweat but have always been thoroughly dried.  I think that some of the imports are made in very humid places and the materials have some kind of spores or bacteria.  I ended up spraying athletes foot spray in them a few times and the smell is pretty much gone.  Kill the little commy *censored* infiltrators!!!

Another trick I was aware of is to always lay your boots on their side for a night after you wear them, this allows convective draft to help dry them out a bit quicker and reduce the chance of skunkboot.

plus new boot insoles and toss the moldy ones

Try putting the boots into a big cardboard box, with a half cup of bleach in a plastic cup.  Close the top of the box. DO NOT pour the bleach in the boots. The bleach fumes will kill the bacteria that causes the smell.  Make sure to do this in a garage, shop or shed were it will not get bumped/nocked over, etc...

After a cold wet day in the woods I like to stuff'em with news paper (especially my Pacs) to soak up what ever moisture there is and after a bit pull it out and toss in one of those Hotties instant warmers.  Ozium is a great odor killer.

I've also used the bathtub faucet to run hot water through stinky boots..
