Wood Duck House
« on: February 26, 2011, 01:56:55 AM »
I built 3 Wood Duck houses today. Putting them up Saturday with Jackmaster. Those Woodies will be migrating back north before we know it.

I built a few and placed them as well.  I was able to get some old rough cut barn boards to use.  I saw a few woodies in the area, so they should get used.

What did you use to predator proof them?

Will the Hoodys nest in those boxes also?

They are not predator proof, but I hung them on snags in the middle of the pond, so they critters would have to swim to get them.  The starlings usually aren't to bad this time of year.

I went to Dels Farm Supply the other day. They had 18" squirrel proof sheetmetal cones to attach below a bird feeder that would work great but I thought $20 each was a bit much.

You can help with the predator proofing by place the hold high enough up above the bottom of the house.  Put some wire mesh on the inside so the ducks can get out, and ideally the ducks inside will be out of reach of predators trying to stick their racoon arms in to grab the ducks.

3x4 elliptical hole will prevent coons from predating. A cone below is another great suggestion if predation becomes a problem. Don't forget to add wood chips to the bottom as wood ducks will not pack in their own nesting material. I run over 40 wood duck boxes on the Columbia and fight the starlings pretty bad.

Wrap a 2-foot band of sheet metal around the trunk so it is about 6 feet off the ground.

I'm looking for some sheet metal and I will cut my own to shape. Anyone have any laying around they'd like to donate?
