Best coyote/deer round?
« on: April 08, 2011, 10:06:50 PM »
I am selling my 9mm carbine in the classifieds to save up for a coyote rifle.  What do you think would be the best round for coyote and the occasional deer?  I am looking for some serious knock down power, but still would rather not ruin the pelt on any coyote too bad as I would like to keep them.

I was thinking a 243 with a light grained bullet for coyote, heavy grain for deer?

Kind of new to guns, usually more of a bow guy, so i need some pointers.

I would say you have picked a round that is spot on. Good choice with the .243.

I agree that the 243 is a good choice for what you're looking for. Instead of using different bullets for different game though, you could probably find a bullet that would work for both. I think I would try the 85 grain Barnes tsx. On a coyote it probably wouldn't even open up. Just going to a light bullet you might not get the results you expect. A lighter bullet will be faster and that's what will destroy a coyote hide. Unless it's the Barnes tsx.

I have switched to a 7mm-08 for most of my yote hunting. I would have no problem using it for deer or anything else. But the 243 and 25-06 are some other great cals to look at.

yes, very nice round for both!
I will have one some day, sticking to having a bunch of different tools for my hobby right now though.

.243 is good.  Might consider .257 Roberts or 6.5 Creedmoor..........or 250 Savage
  http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/finder/

http://www.hornady.com/store/6.5-Creedmoor

Edit - the links to the Savage website are not working like I wanted.  Here are some other links though:  250 Savage
6.5 Creedmoor  Under the savage link, you can punch in the caliber and it will show you the models available in that caliber, but the link to the specific model is not working.

Do they make ball ammo in a 243?

338  :dunno:.  I have a 7mm08 that would work great.  I've killed 4 bears with mine shooting 140 grain bullets.  I don't know what grains are available for reloading.  I know in factory loads I've seen 120 140 and some 150's.  I wouldn't hesitate to shoot an elk with mine.  I wouldn't be taking long shots at elk but it will get the job done on closer ranges for sure.

Agree 100% 257 wby mag.

I like the flat shooting I get from the 7mm-08 and can get into 140-150 grain bullets for any animals out there. Kinda a happy middle place.

The 243 is too small 4 deer, and barely enough for the small dogs.

:)243 knocks coyotes down HARD, much more than my 22-250 and is just as flat. I shot a few deer with it one buck was laying down looking at me about 200 yards, his body was pointed at me, I shot him in the front of the neck just under his muzzle, the 80 grain bullet flipped him clear over on his back, legs sticking up in the air and not even a tiny kick of his feet.
I am real happy with it, very effective on both.

243 will get it done on coyote and its a little messy even with 95gr rounds, youll want to look at 55gr and good placement or solid cooper bullets. The 55gr noslers Ive hit a few yotes with has done a great job with only a entrance hole but the 95gr noslers where nasty  :bdid: ribka can confirm that. I personaly want a 25 cal for deer.

I've palyed with the 243 quite abit starting about 1970.  At that time I found it to be very unreliable on deer, but at that time it had more to do with bullet quality some would pencil through and some would break up on a rib bone so I pretty much shied away from it as a deer round.  I should give it a chance again with premium bullets.

As a coyoter it has proven to be overkill for me as I hunt for pelts, again it had alot to do with bullet performance.  I haven't tried the solid copper bullets YET, but have run some 62gr VGs and found them overly distuctive leaving softball sized exits.  The new Nosler 55gr Lead Free Ballistic Tip is looking promising but they are so new that I have only killed two with them but both were devestating with small entraces and no exits and could take out bone.

I do my deer hunting with something larger as I like to see an good exit but most of my deer hunting is still hunting in heavy cover and I don't always have the perfect broadside shot.  For my coyote hunting I like a light fast 224 that has proven qualities.

For me it's kind of like tools, a vise-grip will get it done most of the time but can make a mess of the job.  I keep one in the tool box though.  There is  usually a 243 in the safe also.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I've killed yotes with a rifle and a shotgun, but i REALLY want one with a bow! I had one at 5 yards last year. Damn thing just appeared and I got it to stop at 10 yards but it was behind some vine maple. so i couldn't get a shot.  :bash:
