Raffle permits gone crazy
« on: May 04, 2011, 10:21:27 PM »
Is it just me, or have the raffle permits gotten a little out of control.   I can sort of get on board with the revenue grab for raffling some permits - something like a single BT permit, single muley permit, single WT permit, eastern elk, western elk, etc.   But these multiple animal permits - harvest 3 of 6, harvest 4 of 5 are questionable to me.  If we truely have some excess animals to be taken, the state should turn these Raffle Permit hunts into Quality hunts for each species.  By eliminating the multi-harvest raffle permit hunts, the state could add a new Quality buck tag for whitetails (with 3 available permits), Quality buck tag for mule deer (2 available permits), Quality buck tag for BT (1 permit), and 3 new quality bull tags.  Offering more special permit hunts increases (albeit slightly) the odds of applicants drawing tags.  These would truely be Quality tags.
Anyway, I'm struggling with this 3-deer, 4 of 5 species, 3 of 6 species - it's no wonder why the gambling commision is sticking their nose into online sales - the bag limit names sound like craps table odds!
Put these hunting opportunties into the permit system and simply raise the price of raffle permits to offset the lost revenue.  And keep the raffle permits simple and limited to one species per geography.

I don't agree with the multiple species raffle permits either. It's just ridiculous. Nobody needs to kill that many trophy animals in one season. Give out more special permit hunts and less raffle permits I say.

We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

It is out of control...even moreso when you consider the funds raised from "multi-species" raffles are not designated for that particular species.

I love 'em, never used to put much money into the raffles until they introduced these!

Too many raffle tags. :twocents:  I mean really, choosing 3 animals harvest out of 5 species???  Can't WDFW find anything better to make an extra buck?

How many feel this way until you draw the multi species permit then it's the coolest thing ever?! Not disagreeing with you Bobcat just playing devils advocate on human nature. I agree if they can put these out then they can increase quality permits like this also without having it a raffle.

Well, I don't put in for the multi-species raffles, because I could never do them justice with my work schedule, but I think it is good that they take some of the pressure off the single species raffles that I do put in for. And since they cost more per ticket, I think it takes even more people out of the single raffle pool.
I know there are guys out there that can take the time off work to do the multi-species tags right.  One of them posted a thread on here (I can't remember who it was), and he harvested some fine animals.
Doesn't have to be "rich" guys either.  I have a couple of buddies in the timber/logging business that spend 300 days a year in the woods.  Those guys could do the tags justice...

I agree Bobcat. I'm not happy at all with the way the WDFW has turned resident hunting into a money grab.

I have a hard time understanding why some one would put in for these. Most every one claims to want to be a good steward of our wildlife resources. I can't imagine anyone needing that much wild meat to eat unless perhaps your feeding a small 3rd world country. Is this nothing more than stroking someones ego to get this tag?  :twocents:

:yeah: Can you imagine your taxidery bill and the cost of gas put into scouting and going to different corners of the state to hunt?  I agree with giving more permits and less raffle.
“In common with”..... not so much!!
