First shoot with my new Vortek

I picked up a Traditions Vortek NW magnum this week and headed out this mourning to go try it out.my first 2 shots at 50 yards were 2" high and 2" left but were allmost touching.so I adjusted the sight for windage and went out to 100 yards and put 3 rnds in a 1.5" group about an 1" high dead center.so I gave it a go at 175 yards.my first shot I aimed high thinking it would drop and it didnt.It hit about 1/2" above the top of the paper which was about an inch above where I was aiming.the next shot I brought it down to the center of the target and hit 2.5" low and 1.5" right.I figure that this gun was worth every penny to see accuracy like that straight out of the box.all 7 shots were with 130 grs of pyrodex and a 300gr sst.

-Those Hornady's are very accurate! I wasnt happy with how they mushroomed on my elk though! But they hold a killer group on paper!

well when you really think about it a .45 cal bullet is still bigger than a .30 cal that has mushroomed.and keeping its total weight its gonna do the job just fine I think.besides with being able to pinpoint where the bullet hits going into the vitals will kill it quick with out needing to mushroom.I bow hunted for years before deciding to try muzzle and a broadhead doesnt expand and kills them quick with a well placed shot and makes about the same size hole as what a .50 cal muzzleloader does even with out mushrooming much.but the muzzle delivers more energy so i think sst's will kill them just as well as any other bullet.

I also recently purchased a Vortek NW Magnum and shot it for the first time this weekend. I had very similar group sizes to those you mentionend using 250g SST's and 300g XTP's over 110g of Triple Seven. However, I was higly dissapointed in that only about 1 out of every 3-4 musket caps would go off! I was using a new batch of RWS musket caps (No. 1081) with the wings. The firing pin was denting the cap, but no cap ignition. Did you experience this at all? Could I have bad caps? Could the hammer not be striking the pin hard enough?

i had it happen a couple times but not as often has you.the thing i found when i got home and was cleaning it was that the rib that runs across the middle of the firing pin was peened over on the edges.I emailed traditions about it yesterday.ill let you know what they reply with.I did find that the second time the hammer hit the same cap it did go off.my buddy has a vortek too and has not had any of this problem.

the two big problems with break action muzzys is weak hammer spring or debris around firing pin...the others are even worse so i will not own one
