Introducing New Hunter (And we drew!)
« on: June 28, 2011, 11:42:13 PM »
When the points situation changed I was left with a bunch of antlerless points that I never intended to use because I had always put in for bull tags.  This year, a buddy of mine decided he wanted to try hunting and I decided to burn my antlerless points by putting in as a group leader and then having him join my group.  Its kind of crazy because we drew Coweeman Antlerless and a buck deer tag as well.  So, he's got his plate full for his first year of hunting!

For those of you familiar with the Coweeman, is it a place where you can get away from the roads and hunt the "right way".  He's really against going road hunting and I'm not a road hunter either.  I've just heard stories that its a hard unit to get away from the road hunters.  I mostly hunt the Winston area and have had great luck there getting away from the road hunters.

No and yes it is industrial timberland so lots of roads. Lots of roads = lots of people. That being said you get into the jackfirs that are thick you are away from most. I will say that is a meat shoot for the most part.

I grew up elk hunting this unit. There is allot of roads in it but if you hunt it right it can be allot of fun. Find some older jack firs where you can see several hundred yards and slide off the road into them and just watch them. The elk feed in that jungle all day long. We have had a lot of success doing that. Tbar is right.

Are jackfirs the overgrown reprod (30 or 40 feet tall) that you can walk and see through?  That's typically how I hunt in the Winston unit.  I find overgrown skid roads that get into trees a ways.  The underbrush turns to green leafy stuff when you get into them and you can often see elk through the trees.

I usually hit the smaller ones.  The stuff you can look down on and see 400 yards. They feed out into the small openings between the trees.  That stuff holds a lot elk.  If you need I can give you some hot spots in the coweeman.  I have spent a ton of time in there.

I agree the trees that are 10 to15ft. and smaller they will open up and hold elk. Like I said if you spend some time there it'll be a meat shoot.
