Elk rut in Montana
« on: July 07, 2011, 08:35:56 AM »
Hey all, Just a quick question for those of youwho have hunted elk during the rut in Montana. The archery season runs from Sept 6-Oct 15 in many of the areas open for archery elk. This will be my first elk trip there and was wondering when would be the best time to catch the rut? first part of the season or more toward the last. I know this all depends on the weather and can vary area by area but any help would be greatly appreciated. We will be hunting down by The town of Dillon.

The thing you always have to remember with the elk rut anywhere is the moon phase.  Full moon is the devil in elk hunting.  Last week of september this year just happens to be a new moon so that is the week I would hit it.  End of september you can't go wrong

It took 7 points on a special permit to learn that lesson!  I always check moon phases before applying for special permits now.  Full moon=ghost point for me!

We were there three years ago and are going back this year.  We will be there from Sept 10 to Oct 1.  Last time we were there the rut was going strong during mid september, but the weather was perfect.  I am a believer that when the nights turn cold and the moons hides the elk will be singing.

Good luck and wave if you see Washington plates.

I agree with the bad mojo full moon too!  I'll be out in North Idaho from the 16th-26th, moon should be good to go! ;)
