I am trying Bowhunting this year for the first time and because all of my partners are boostick hunters I will probably be going alone. I will be hunting the grayback gmu 388 this year for deer because it's a antlerless gmu and will probably take a doe since it's my first time. As for elk I will be hunting in Packwood Gmu 516 because I know the land and have private property that overlloks the town and a cabin. If anyone wants to show a new dog some tricks I would probably be interested. I also put out a couple bait sights in both areas and a trail cam in P-wood. I will be hunting out of a ground blind and will probablt hunt and stalk as well.
But love of the wilderness is more than a hunger for what is always beyond reach; it is also an expression of loyalty to the earth which bore us and sustains us, the only home we shall ever know, the only paradise we ever need - if only we had eyes to see.

Good luck in Grayback with a bow. I haven't heard of very many people with great success up there in about 10 years. Just isn't want it use to be. :ACRY:

Hunted packwood last rifle season with a friend of mine who has a cabin up there he was suppose to know the area well wich  I didn't since I am a bowhunter it took him a while to talk me into it and I regret it because he didn't know the area at all and after hunting a few areas he swore had elk I decided to buy a topographic map and I ended up getting  us into elk the first area I picked n we saw quite a few after that and he missed a shot at a bull the area is pretty steep and rugged but those elk are in there man good luck

If you can find the right ground near Goldendale there can be a lot of deer.  Hot and dry and a little difficult to hunt, but definitely possible.  I'm a bowhunter but shot a bunch of deer near there with a rifle.  I had access to land that's no longer open to hunt so now I hunt elsewhere, unfortunately.

Good luck - way to set your sights realistically by being willing to shoot a doe.  You need a deer or two under your belt and you can get get after bucks.  I hadn't gotten just pumped about shooting a deer in years until I took up bowhunting (this was now 6 or 7 years ago) and was as excited as a kid when I managed to shoot a small 3 point buck my first year.  Have fun and don't let yourself get too frustrated!  It'll happen for you.

I shot a nice 4pt in goldendale last year, there are lots of deer in that area but also a lot of private land. Its good hunting is Sept.

Last year in Packwood the Elk turned on early. (Labor day) The Highway west of town had Elk on it all night and the feilds were full of Elk at first light. The Bulls were talken too.  With private access you should have a good early hunt! Good luck and keep your eyes open if you are driving after dark..........
Elk 23 for 30 but whos counting!
My son out did me his first year out at 13! 5x5 missed the book by 1 1/8" and Yeh I am proud of him!
I'm ready for tall timber and deep canyons, are you?
