300 RUM/210 Berger/Retumbo... how many grains do you use?

How many grains are you using? According to Berger.. Max grains is 92 and getting 2913 FPS with 26" barrel...

Curious as to what others are getting ... If above 3000 FPS AND shooting 26" barrel let me know what your recipe is.

Those bullets are pretty long. If you load to fit in the mag well then you'll be crunching powder at about 93 gr. I'm loading 95gr under the 208gr A-max and the powder is very compresed, 95.5 under the 200gr accubond is about 100% full, both loaded as long as I can and still fit in the 700's mag. well.

I have a Sendero, and am shooting 210 grain bergers over 90 grains of retumbo. this combo gets 2860 out of my rifle and shoots lights out. .5 inch at 100 yards. i have shot to 830 so far and had fabulous results. IMO you dont need 3000 fps. mine are loaded to just fit in the mag. around 3.71 or so.

93-94gr Retumbo, 210 Berger touching lands.  OAL is 3.780" using a custom chamber though.  3100-3150fps in 26-28" barrels is the norm.  I would probably start down around 91 and work up with a factory rifle.  Seating them at at 3.6" mag length is going to take up quite a bit more room in the case and cause pressure to rise.

According to Berger reload data, max grains for retumbo is 92.. are you seeing any pressure problems using 93-94?

No pressure issues at all, but keep in mind that my OAL is .180" longer than normal specs.  This lowers the pressure alot, even touching the lands.

Coal must have a pretty good impact on pressure as I was showing extractor marks at 91 grains. And groups were double size right at 1 moa. I backed off to 90 for.better groups. Never played with coal any as 1/2 inch at 100 yards is plenty good for me.

COAL has a huge affect on pressures.  Barrel and chamber design will make small differences, but increasing or decreasing COAL will change pressure drastically.

I have a factory chamber and my OAL 3.67.. I wish I could load it a bit longer, but the magazine wont feed if the OAL is any longer, damn rounds wont fit! Apparently this is pretty common in Remingtons.  I don't see any pressure signs using RL 25 at 88 grains, I will be chrony'ing the Retumbo load Thursday and report back.. I am hoping for 3100 out of 26" Hart barrel but we will see. If I don't get the same accuracy though then it will be all for nothing. We will see.

I can't remember right off hand, but I'm thinking I was right around 2980 fps with 91 grains.  The 190's shot better at longer ranges out of that gun, so I stuck with that load.

Gonna try the Retumbo with the 200 Grain Nosler Accubonds.. they did not seem to like the RL 25 much, but perhaps with the Retumbo they will be straiten out.

Just curious, How much RL 25 are you using, is the load compressed at all?

87.9 Grains of RL 25 gets me 2950 FPS and about .375 MOA. It is not a compressed load, but admittingly I am over recommended max grain from Berger. I have seen NO pressure signs whatsoever though and I have fired a LOT of these rounds.

Hmm.. Perhaps I will try that. I have pretty much wanted to stay with the 210 as well because of the rediculous BC.. but the BC out of the 190s is super high too.. (0.57).

Hopefully you are still around.  I just bought a 300 RUM  700 RMEF.  What load did you end up with?  any advice will be appreciated.

Hi, Ironhead, its still somewhat of a work in progress. After anothe trip to the range the Retumbo got to about a MOA if not a bit under. The RL 25 is still working well, but at longer distances I am wondering if the FPS variance has changed a bit because my trip to the 600 yard range my shots were a bit high.. grouping but a bit high.

Just a tip.. if the 300 RUM RMEF rifle you got came with the same plastic hollow stock as mine did... do yourself a favor and go to stockysstocks.com and pick out a drop in replacement. The kick on that rifle is good enough that your finger will bang against the trigger guard. Plus, accuracy cinches up a bit more with that.

I made the switch to 215 Berger hybrids using 90.2 grains retumbo and oal of 3.8 shot a 5 shot group at 220 yards that measured 0.7 inches. Have held sub minute to 1000... shooting at 2950. Same powder charge nets 100 Fps more with 215 than 210 for me. Better BC (.696) also.
Just a thought. I have 60 or so 210 vlds if you are interested in buying I could part with.

I am just getting started with this round.  It appears that you have yours dialed in pretty good.  If I can even come slightly close to your numbers I will be thrilled!  I will be heading to Alaska for some hunting in the fall.  Winter will be a good time to play around and get a good load worked up.  I can shoot out to 450 from my living room!  No mop squeezer here to complain about the noise!  Thanks for the info.

try calling the guys at " best of the west" they shoot the bergers and im pretty sure they use retumbo also they might have some info for ya

I would trust Travis (Rbros) advice over any info you'll get from the Best of the West guys... imho they are there to sell rifles and scopes, and most of their guns they sell won't hold better than 1/2 MOA on 5 rounds.  Just my opinion but maybe they do have a decent load for you.

Have a friend with one in Moses, and my college roommate had a hunting partner that hunted with one as well. Both were about 3/4-1MOA guns.  For the money you spend on their rifle you could get better components and more accuracy from any competent gunsmith.
Why do you think you see them with hunters all the time and never at any kind of rifle match?  TV and the internet sells...

Interesting... My son's 338 RUM really, really likes 96.4 grains or Retumbo with 250 gr. HPBT MatchKing.

I have not tried the Berger 338 300 gr Match Hybrid OTM Tactical bullet yet but I am betting it will be a good shooter as well.

They definitely work don't let anyone tell you different.  There are just better places to spend your money in my opinion.  For a hunting rig I would rather buy an out of the box savage or rebarrel and true a Rem 700 and tune some loads for it and get a good scope with either MOA or MIL turrets (I don't really care for the CDS type dials, they are very limited) and learn to use a ballistic calculator and print out your own dope cards and go hunt.  Know the difference in your cold bore shots and practice and there's no reason you can't take game out there at 600+ yards depending on conditions and knowledge of your setup.
