Should WDFW sell leftover special permits?

As many of you know in many states the special hunt permits that are not awarded to hunters through the state's special permit system can be purchased on a first-come-first-serve basis over the counter to hunters. WA is one of a few states that does not currently allow this practice.

My poll/question is do you think WDFW should allow the "leftover" permits to be sold over the counter to whoever purchases them first?

For example for the 2011 season there were 342 deer permits that were not awarded to hunters. Those include 3 buck, 3 disabled, 10 youth, and 326 second deer permits. There were 133 elk permits not awarded; 20 antlerless, and 113 master hunter most of which are second elk permits.

It seems like some WDFW is losing out on $ by simply not allowing these permits to be used. There are also some people who don't know their hunting season availability until after the permit application period.

I think I will vote to keep it the same.  This is essentially becasue I don't think there are any, and we'd have to waste money to contract with an outside vendor to run such a sale, a waste in wildlife dollars.

bigtex i am confused because in all the permit categories, there are people putn in for permits so how would there be any leftovers, i can see why there are alot of second deer permits, but what area are the youth permits for that didnt get drawn, or the elk, or are these the type of permits where they give out 100 and only say 50 people put in for, just curious sorry if i have confused the hell out of you

To answer your question the youth deer permits that didn't meet it's quota number and had leftover permits were 1548 Wannacut, 1549 Pogue, 1550 Chiliwist, 1551 Alta. The antlerless elk were 2282 & 2283 Couse

I think he's saying that in certain categories there are more permits than applicants, so the draw odds are 100% AND there are 'unwanted?' permits.  I would say, sell them.  BUT sell them at permit cost plus application cost, so it would be the same price as those that actually did the drawing.

thanks bigtex, i dont want to complicate things but in my opinion any tags that are left should go to the youth first and then after they get theres then sell them on a first come first serve basis

I think if they did something liek a first come first serve basis then I suppose.  If it involved a second draw, I wouldn't waste my time.

I say allow the purchase of tags, HOWEVER I think a LOT of 2nd DOE tags are goning to remain unfilled. I know for a fact that out in the islands there are not  that many people willing to sport $60 to kill an island doe. So they can offer those up if they want, but there will still be a 100% draw on some of the islands.
I like venision, but if i get the hankering to shoot a second doe then i'll buy some beef steak and take the bow tot he club, grillem up and walk the course!

Took the words out of my mouth.  Also, a lot of the islands are mostly to all private land.
