Muley 10/28
« on: November 01, 2011, 08:30:58 AM »
i shot this muley buck on friday 10/28 at about 110 yards. it was a great hunt. i went with huntnnw to the same area where he shot his buck and found this one. it is one that he passed when he shot his. thought i would share some pics.

we were walking a road on the edge of the wilderness and were seeing a lot of smaller bucks and just couldnt pick out a shooter. we walked around a corner and see this buck bedded 130 yards away. i notice big forks, good mass, and brow tines and decide he is a shooter. i lay down with my bipod out and a pack under my stock. i shoot expecting the buck to just roll over in his bed. he gets up "WHAT!?" shot over him. he stands broadside same place i take aim high shoulder and touch one off. this time he jumps up and turns and taked a couple steps clearly not hit. i jack another shell in and try again... hang fire... WTF!
by this time i was about to give up. huntnnw says he thinks i was shooting over. the entire herd starts trotting sidehill below us to our left and he files out and i say ill try again. pull up off hand hold low heart area and shoot. buck hit! he stiffens up and walks inbto some spruce trees and crashes there. had to tie him off to a tree when we quartered him it was so steep, and slicker than snot! 80 yards up to the road and he was loaded.

when we got back to camp I shot my gun and it is 7-8 inches high at 100 yards. no wonder i missed over him. headed to the range this week to sight in for elk next week.

it was a great hunt and a ton of fun!

VERY nice buck!  :yike:  But don't ya think you should have gone to the range before you went on your trip?   :chuckle: :dunno:

Great looking buck.
It always confounds me how a rifle can be "on" just a few days before the season, then "off" by opening day.  Bouncing around in the truck I guess.  It has happened to me before.  Shot it on the Sunday before opening day at the range and was 2 1/2 inches high at 100, just the way I like it.  Took it out 6 days later and overshot 3 times at 300 yards.  Took it to the range that afternoon and it wasn't even on paper... :yike: :dunno:
Personally, I think "Murphy" has an Allen wrench.... :chuckle:

Glad you were able to make it work for you though   Good luck elk hunting
