a preventative shave is a good idea. armpits, between the toes, any high friction area.
when I was a kid no one told me about chick weed seeds, and checking your dog. my poor springer had seeds imbedded in the skin between her toes and her armpits. it was as bad as getting porcupine quills out.
as far as getting the matts out... horse hair detangler, pam and vaseline are good choices. personally I prefer to keep pam around, its a great multi-tasker if I cook a tailgate lunch.
