Burrs and chit on your shaggy haired pup!?!
« on: December 09, 2011, 10:50:05 AM »
So what methods do you use to try and make it easier to deal with burrs on your long haired friends? I have always had short haired dogs and this little springer pup can flat collect some dam hounds tongue and other burrs. Ack! Honestly, I've just been picking off the easy ones and cutting out the rest! I did talk to a guy that uses Pam to spray them down (hopefully not the butter flavored stuff) and a lady told me she uses horse main detangler on her golden....

I also clip him now and again, which does help I think. But I love his curly coat and dont like to keep him short all the time!

With my Golden Retriever I used to clip the hair on her legs, her rear, and her underside really short. That would help a lot. Other than that all you can do is bring a good metal comb and scissors and comb and cut them out every day after your hunt.

a preventative shave is a good idea. armpits, between the toes, any high friction area.
when I was a kid no one told me about chick weed seeds, and checking your dog. my poor springer had seeds imbedded in the skin between her toes and her armpits.  it was as bad as getting porcupine quills out.

as far as getting the matts out... horse hair detangler, pam and vaseline are good choices. personally I prefer to keep pam around, its a great multi-tasker if I cook a tailgate lunch.

I had a passel of springers about 20 years ago now,In the heat of the summer when I could see that they were absolutely miserable ..................I bucked all that hair off of them and made them look like GSPs' and Pointers,by the time huntin season rolled around they had a nice coat on em but it was not a klingon grabber. Oster golden a-5 with a #10 blade in july nets you ......................... minimal crap to comb out in october thru december.................... and it doesn't matter unless.............your showing

We've been exclusively springers since '84.  When quail and chuckar hunting we trim all feathers and long hair on their underside to 1/2" or less.  Always amazes me how fast the feathers will come back after the season.  Then spray apply DVM HyLyt bath oil we get from the vet.  Works to keep the burrs at bay and keeps their skin moisturized even if we run a lot of mud like we do around Crab Creek and Satus.  Before we started using it their skin would be dry and the house would stink for weeks.  8oz will last a whole season.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
