no sheds till mar. 15?
« on: January 17, 2012, 11:12:45 PM »
is there any law about getting sheds before mar. 15 on public land?  the reason i am asking is cause the critical time in a deer and elks life is late winter and early spring.  the shed hunters are in the field at that time disturbing the animals when they are trying to make it thru the winter. this winter has been nice but the last 2 have been tough real tough.  this is something that needs to be looked at with decreasing habitat and more people population .  mike w

No there aren't any laws in place.  There are areas that are restricted until May 1st though, such as Oak Creek Wildlife area.

This is going to open a whole can of worms though...    If you want public lands shut down to people shed hunting, then you better be shutting it down to hikers, snowshoers, hunters, fishermen, campers, skiers, snowmobilers, etc...

Like Miles said, most of the major wintering areas have restrictions already.
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.

Some restraint would go a long ways with some people, no matter what the user group is.   Others do just fine.

There are some people that could spend the entire winter out there and have minimal impact on wildlife and the country side.   Then you have those that are pushing game.  Think its cool to Rover out there becasue he is a shed dog, and all he is is a backyard mutt that like to run game.   You have idiots on quads tearing up the hillside.   Its a black eye to EVERY user group.   There are guys that utilize quads and take care of the resource.  There are guys that have trained dogs that stay close and don't chase game.   There are guys that can take photos all day and hunt coyotes and shed hunt and not bother or push game.   What do you do.  Put everyone in the woods during fawning and calving season with their dogs.  Put pressure on them at that time or should it be pushed off to July and August.   Ultimately if you plice your own, HOWEVER then people say you should ALL STAND together.  Divided you are conquered.   How about standing up for what is right and doing the right thing.
I chose last year to give them a break with the big winter.  I lsot out on a bunch of sheds I am sure.  My choice I guess.

Are you for real?  Is that an actual start for a May first opener over there, or a photo of something else you thought would be funny?  If thats real, that's nuts!  Lol
