Best bow shot?
« on: January 22, 2012, 02:30:31 PM »
Hey,

I was just wondering if anybody has ever had a really lucky bow shot?  I have not been into archery for very long so I have not had that unbelievable shot yet, but I guessed that there are some people on this forum that have had some pretty amazing shots.   :)

I've had some pretty amazing shots over the years, but it's hard to narrow it down to any one in particular.  Here's a few:

25 yard shot on a grouse, in a tree, hit him in the back of the head
27 yard shot on an impala, through an 8" opening in the brush
40 yard shot on a bull elk while in a canoe, took out the top of his heart
20 yard "robin hood" while shooting blue face targets (not overly unusual, but a first for me)

Nice work doublej.  My best would be a doe I shot a few years back 63 yards right in the front shoulder quartered to me slightly.   Watched her fall after about 50yards.

87 yard boiler room shot on a 6x7 bull. Got lucky with a Whitey does several years ago. 37 yard chipshot but string hit my coat and arrow went through one eye and out back of here head. Did the trick. Two robin hoods. One at 20 yards and one at 30.

4 grouse head shots at 35-45 yards.  I won't take "lucky" or risky shots at any big game animal.

Had a pig on Catalina at 30 yards back in the days of loud bows and slow arrows.  After taking the range with my awesome Ranging 80/2 rangefinder I drew and took the shot.  The pig spun and watched the arrow hit the dirt right where his heart had been.  I quickly took another shot with the same result.  After that second shot the boar decided to head for the Casino like he was late for happy hour.  I quickly nocked a third arrow and let fly at 55 yards as he ran directly away from me.  In my despiration I pounded that trigger like I was trying to slap a fly off my neck.  I could clearly see my bright five inch feathered 2216 racing for the dirt a good three feet to his right.  Just before the arrow passed him he decided to take a hard right turn.  20 yards later he piled up in a heap of porkchop pie having had my Savora Swept-Wing four blade take out his heart and both lungs.  Might not have been my best shot, but it certainly was my lucky day.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Another shot that I will always remember was a spike elk out of my treestand.  He busted me in the tree and started to take off I stopped him with a cow call and had to lean out and shoot completely behind the tree I was in.  Watched that arrow hit right in the pocket at 30 yards.  It was probably the most pumped up after a shot I've ever been.

Shortest shot 3 feet on my first archery blacktail buck.  He walked  right by the tree that I was hiding behind.  Luckily for me it was in a torrential down pour and he couldn't hear or smell me.  I drew back as soon as his head was on the other side of the tree and released 4 seconds later after he cleared.  The arrow went clean through and only the flethcing was sticking out of the ground.  Best shot on a deer was I nailed a big whitetail buck at 20 yards from my treestand and dropped it in it's tracks.  Best shot on elk, I hit him at 30 yards, he calmly walked 30 feet, bedded down and went to sleep, no running.

10 yard shot on a pheasant that had just flushed.. he went straight up and the arrow took him in the neck... I will say I was aiming center body mass but it sure looked cool...

Me and a buddy were stumping, he had his Outback and I had my longbow. There was a downed log about 65 yards across a draw. He picked a spot and hit about 6 inches from it. I picked a spot where an old limb came onto the log and hit is dead on, probably no more than an inch from where I wanted the arrow to go. Haven't had any amazing shots on game, other than just a few nice kill shots on some muley does. I suck at bowhunting, but am an ok archer!   :dunno:   :chuckle:

I was hunting with a buddy who does archery during elk season..... He's a great shot at the range out past 100 yards.... We snuck in on a herd of Rosie's in dark timber.... I spotted a legal bull and was telling him when it cleared some branches he couldn't see... I was looking through my binocs and ranging for him.... He was at full draw for almost a minute and I knew it was taking it's toll along with elk fever... When I said he was clear at 27 yards and to aim low for the heart.... There were some small branches a little higher that could possibly mess the shot up.... I watched the arrow fly too far right knick the right side of the tree and vere into the bulls hindquarters....  :yike:  The blood trail wasn't very good and the bull took a different direction then the rest of herd.... Two hours later we found him bedded and on the edge of a cut with no way of getting closer because of wind and terrain..... Wind changed and the bull slowly got up and started to walk into the timber.... I told my buddy 107 yards wait for him to clear the tree.... 109 yards he's clear..... Kinda.... Double lunged him quartering away between two trees about two feet apart with small branches here and there.... Turned out to be a nice 5x6.... One hell of a pack out.... Glad he only went down the mountain another 50 yards...

First bow kill was a bedded down grouse at 10 yards decapitated it.

My first mulie was a button buck that I thought was a doe (still legal) first spotted it broadside and as I drew back it quartered towards and turned strait on as I released, hit it in the neck severing the artery, punched through the chest bone and down the right lung. It only ran a few yards before bleeding out. I kicked myself for taking the shot and was thankful it hit all the right things.

I took a mulie doe this year at 40 yards broadside double lung that too out 4” of rib on exit. Nothing like the sound of bone cracking!

Oh, I robin hooded someone’s arrow while shooting hay bales at 30 yards, didn’t know it till I went to get my arrow.
God Bless,
Scott

Years ago on my 18th b-day I shot a cow 55yrds, took the top of her heart off. I've knocked quite a few arrows at 20-30yrds. But Robbin Hooded and arrow while practicing in the back yard 50yrds. I'd rather be LUCKY than GOOD any day...

Any shot that brings down an animal, or bird, in the shortest amount of time, as far as I am concerned, is a damn good shot.  The less you have to wak to recover your harvest the better.  I mean, after all, isn't there an energy crisis going on?

Posted in first deer in Washington thread about buying bow at yard sale and teaching self to hunt. Well that was luckiest shot I've made. Had read every published article about shot placement, kill zone, ethical shot, ect. Well all that went out window. Saw first deer (BT doe) looking at me over a brush pile at about 30 yrds. All o could see was head and neck. Flung first 3 arrows into the brush pile in about 5 seconds. As she turned to walk away (sure she was laughing)  last arrow cleared brush and caught her right under neck. Severed carotid and stuck in chin. Went about 3 leaps and down. Looked like someone had poured 5 gal. bucket of blood on ground. Didn't stop me from nearly severing head to bleed as all the articles I read said was procedure. Wasn't clean, pretty, or good form, but was first deer I ever harvested. Took 3 years to get next one, but by then had proper equipment and had learned much about sport.
Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me

My 1st bow kill was a spike blacktail that was looking at me from between 2 alders. All I could see was his head and top half of his neck. I ranged him at 31 yards and put my 30 yard pin on him and let the arrow fly. I hit him in the eye with the arrow exiting out the opposite ear and sticking in the tree that he was practically leaning against, the arrow basically kept him pinned against the tree, died on his feet. I've learned alot since then and wouldn't take that shot again, doubt I'll ever have an easier tracking job either. :chuckle:
