Out of velvet already

I was up at work yesterday and ran across a herd of 50-60 animals. Lots of cows, a few spikes, raghorns and some lesser 6's. One of the 6's was already out of velvet ~ seemed kind of early to me. He wasn't real big maybe 240-250 inches and everything else in the herd with horns was still fuzzy. Isn't he a month or better early? Anyone else see this yet?

Begining of August is usually when the mature bulls will start rubbing.

Its a bit early, but then the doe Lil photographed by camp in the Methow this weekend was coming out of her red already

I heard that we are due for an early fall & winter.  I know my apple trees have never been so loaded or early as they are this year.

more than 1 of the bulls i saw in the blues this weekend had some velvet hanging.

Spent last weekend walking the elk woods up high.  We didn't see any fresh rubs yet so no evidence that they are rubbing but would agree with Bone that first part of August is generally the time frame so wouldn't be surprised if a few started already.

Hiked all around my area and usually loaded with rubs but I couldn't find a one. Had the wife with me and wanted to show her how much the trees get torn up, but none around.

They usually start shedding about a week into August in my area with most doing it around the 13th to the 15th.

Saw 4 Teanaway bulls Wednesday - all in velvet, but done growing antlers.

Occasionally but rarely a Bull will not lose his antlers and he will keep them for an extra year...that is what you may have seen. I have been scouting alot already because I drew a special permit and I have seen lots of Elk and Bulls and they all look in the "normal" velvet mode to me..............Les

Was out the other day and saw lots of rubs, I saw some cows and a spike. His spikes were crazy long but in the velvet.
