Is this a loophole?
« on: February 12, 2012, 09:14:12 PM »
If you were in the woods during the rut and you called in a bull, but no horn--would you shoot?  Is it a spike?  Is it a loophole?

I saw a post on general about the feeding station and I just never thought about it.  Am I missing something?

Maybe I'm not tracking right (which is entirely possible), but if it has cajones but no antlers, it's considered an antlerless elk.  It's gotta have an antlered projection from the skull to make it an antlered bull.

Right...the wording is not bull or cow, it's antlered or antlerless.
No loophole.

In Washington "Visible Antler" determines whether an animal is antlered or antlerless. But in many other western states there is a minimum lenth that antlers must be for this determination. If you plan an out-of-state hunt it is imperative to know this.

A better example of a possible loophole if you wanted to look at it that way would be if you were on a late antlerless hunt where you happened to shoot a bull or buck that had dropped it's antlers and then be lucky enough to find the matched set.

It would have to be a real early antler drop for an elk, but I think it would be at least somewhat possible with deer and moose.

This would be a way to shoot a Washington bull moose and not have it be a OIL hunt.

So here's the other side of the coin.  You're hunting in a spike unit (not true spike) and a big non typical 6x1 comes walking by.  Do you shoot it or let it walk.

How is that the other side of the coin? I believe that a 6x1 is a legal bull in a spike, ( not true spike) area, so who in their right mind would pass on that bull?

I would worry about finding a 6x1 first...then, if you aren't going to whack it....I'll help you out. Besides..thats what friends are for right?

No loophole there, either it had a spike on one side or it didn't.  :dunno:

It would depend on the tag in my pocket. East or west side. If I was hunting bulls with a valid tag then I would probably attempt a shot. If I was on an antlerless hunt then no. I think it would come down to ethics.  :twocents:

I have also heard of someone shooting a legal buck that had female parts. How do you leave proof of sex on the animal?  :dunno:
