Need a pistol suggestion for my wife
« on: February 23, 2012, 07:24:47 PM »
Getting a pistol for my wife. She is not new to guns but does need more work with them. This gun will be for concealed carry and a quick grab home gun if she can't get to the shotgun. There are a few parameters I'd like you to try to stay within:

1. Looking for one of these cartridges, in my order of preference
1. 9mm
2. .38 special (She's owned one of these before)
3. .380 Auto
4. 9x18mm Makarov

2. Looking to stay under $500

3. her hands are SMALL. My Glock 19 is too large. She can hold it and put her finger on the trigger but, length of pull is just too long for her to pull with any accuracy, even with the 3.5lb trigger.

Have you considered a revolver?  Much simpler.

.38 special is on the list.  She's owned one before.  She's not gun illiterate and knows how to work a semi-auto, just hard to find one small enough.  That's why I'm asking for help.  A Walther PPK is an option I guess.  Just hoping there's a smaller 9mm out there that I haven't thought of

That's what she had before.  S&W Model 642.  Had the pink grip and everything

My wife.didn't like the 642. Too light for +p rounds or even standard .38s. I have it as a BUG and shes much happier with the heavier (but still small) 640. She just shoots and carries .38s even though it will take .357s.

Best wishes for your search.

Kel Tec P3AT.. I have one and I love it. Its flawless and accurate, and I have a belt clip on it like a pocket knife for IWB carry. fits in a pocket too, and the trigger pull isnt that heavy but does take some getting used to.

Alot of people think theyre too good for a Kel Tec though, so you could go with the Ruger rip off of the P3AT, the Ruger LCP. basically the same thing just costs a little more and a little better finish.

Hungarian FEG in 9 mak or 380. Not expensive and they will still work even if not squeezed in a vice hold. Small grip size, same as a pp/ ppk without paying for the name. Double action only auto's are flooding the female geared defense market, but the trigger pull is usually excessive. The 3" ladysmiths are usually smooth and a little easier to hit with than the 2"ers. Model 38's with the shrouded hammer are better than the centennial concealed hammer style. Again, excessive trigger pull makes the things hard to hit with for many ladies. No reason to make things more difficult than they has to be. Kel tec 3at has a skinny trigger and rough frame. Ruger LCP has a slide lock for ez handling and a wider trigger, but they are both equipped with really excessive length of pull and weight on the trigger pull. I own them all. Feg in 9 mak stings a little, but shoots .380 also.

Yeah, forgot about the Kahr. They are spendy but have a very thin grip radius and super smooth trigger pulls. I used to have a steel framed 9 and upgraded to PM-45. Over $500

serious, if its for personal defence in SHTF someone is coming thru my window/door and her adrenline is amped thru the roof you'll want something simple - a revolver fits this bill as a backup to a shotgun.

everyone wants to run and get some auto, but revolers still have a place in personal defence and exceed autos in many areas - including simplicity

My son's girlfriend just got one of these for concealed carry.  It's a Beretta Tomcat .32.  Much easier than her .45.  Nice little gun.  My daughter is thinking about picking one up.  Comes in black with blued or black with stainless.  Runs about $350-$460 depending on model and where you see them.  Neat way to unload the chamber.

Here's a video which explains it better than I could......
