Yes, those fit the AR15, its limitation is mag length, but there are tons of options, plus its lighter than an AR10, and alot cheaper

And what's the difference between A2 and A3?

A2 has a rear sight and carry handle that is always attached. The A3 is a flat top picatinny rail, much better for mounting optics.  I would suggest you go with the ar over the ak.  I got a plum crazy composite lower just to abuse and I gotta say it has exceeded all expectations. I wouldn't probably by another one, but I would recommend one for a budget build.  I have put a couple thousand rounds through mine and haven't had any functioning issues.   The mag well is tighter than my metal ones, you really have to make sure the mag is seated all the way.   :twocents:

I have an ar and have been contemplating selling my current 20 inch stainelss heavy barreled upper and replacing it with a shorter lighter more tactical type barreled upper. I origiknally built it for coyote hunting but now want to play more. Ars are sweet. You are right on the price of AK being lower and in my experience they are almost indestructible. If you can get a round to chamber they will most likely shoot. They can take some serious abuse.

Make sure you are going to be ok with a plastic gun with that poly lower.  I am not sold on the plastic lower at all personally.

For a fun beater gun an AK is awfully hard to beat. You can definitely get an AK cheaper than the one you linked though, mine is one of my favorite guns to shoot, it's reasonably accurate, unstoppably reliable and it just never fails to make me smile when the handguard starts smoking!  :chuckle: :chuckle:

The best part is that I don't feel bad about beating on it like that!
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

AK-74?  I know the AK-47's are cheaper.  And I know there are Polish Tantal models for sale for about $350 but, I've heard some really bad things about those

Double J there is a company that makes an upper in .308 for your AR lower. The upper looks retarded though as it has it's own magazine well mounted on the side of the upper. I've not heard of those plum crazy lowers giving any issues and the guy that makes them seems to stand behind them pretty well. There are those that are still not sold on plastic handguns either.  :twocents:

i wouldn't have any issues in running a poly lower.  all the bang is contained in the upper, the lower being a place for the trigger and magazine.     if i were in the military?  sure, no poly lower then, but for the average user, poly is plenty!

there was a company a couple of years ago making modular AR lowers that allowed a person to swap between .223 and .308 and on up to .50 BMG!  i'll try to dig out the magazine this weekend.  my google-fu seems to be lacking today!  must be all the rain.... i don't know how you wet-siders do it! :o

edit:
It was a COBB MCR that had the interchangable mag modules for .223 to 30-06...

another edit:
Colt is now in on the game, too!  http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_2_29/199659_.html

I missed the fact that you wanted a 74, the prices have certainly gone up on them too! I would probably opt for a Vepr if I was going to spend that much on an ak and them modify ti to take standard magazines.
