outdoor hiking gun - what do you carry?
« on: May 30, 2012, 08:53:47 PM »
I need to get a outdoor open carry pistol for out picking huckle berries, fishing or just walking the dog.

Leaning towards a stainless revolver, hogue rubberized grips so it won't slip even when wet, and fairly powerful.

What you all pack? And what do you regret about it?  too big, not big enough??  etc etc

Browning Hi-Power 9mm.  If I can't kill it with two 15 round mags, it won't die.  It points well and everyone that's ever shot it said they liked it better than their _____ (fill in the blank)

Ruger Redhawk SS .44 mag with Pachmayr grips  I carry it in a nylon Uncle Mikes holster in a cross draw type set up.  That way it is out of my way berry picking, or carrying a .22 rifle or shotgun if it is grouse season...

Have never regretted carrying it.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

2 for me. Judge 3 inch mag 410. 45 LC or my Glock 29sf 10mm. Both small enough and won't be too friggin' big and will get the job done. Ya don't need those magnums.  :twocents:
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

Depends how thick it is...629 classic 8 3/8" .44 is great, 586 6" easier to carry, 66 2 1/2" or 60 2" .357 really comfortable, .460 8 3/8 if expecting something out of the ordinary. .45acp commander is handy, some days it's one of the .22 airlites, other days, some combination. All a trade off with pros and cons to all. XVR in a chest holster not really neccesary for short hikes, but the .22's might not be enough far from pavement. Used to carry a G 29 10mm or SS Bisely Vaquero .44 mag. Choose what you hit best with and can lug up a long hot hike. Or pack something heavy and consider it a pre season workout. I learned strong side carry is better than anything, changing clothes is a pain with shoulder and chest rigs.

686

4" stainless with a Hogue grip. The holster that I am using for it isn't the best but it carries well (not too big or heavy) and should be more than adequate for any black bear or meth-head!
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.
