Just take two rigs and make sure he knows how to get back. Lay the rules out ahead of time so that there are no hard feelings and see what happens. Atleast that's what I'd do?

Well sounds like the philosophy you used last year will work this your for your friend. You have to test him because if you should happen to get an animal its a whole different story. If he insists on his romeo's take him where they won't do much good i.e. up hill, sidehill, down hill as that will be a leson learned. Tell him you have to do conditioning hikes and if he wants to go with you so does he.

DO NOT Take him, it will ruin your trip..  Atleast until he gets into quality gear that could save his and your life.  I made the mistake ONCE and only once of taking a guy on a north slope Caribou hunt.  After five miles of tundra he was smoked, smoked as it got.  Started out he bragging about being a Ranger and how they could hump forever!   Actually worried how I was going to get his big butt back to the road for safety, let alone caring out a boned out carcass.  Next two days I got my two Caribou and had to do all the work myself.  He never left the truck cap while I was gone, as his feet were so blistered, knees swollen and back ached....He asked if we could share meat on way home (16hrs)...  uagh--- NO!

Do him a favor and give him a helpful list.  If he listens or not who cares.  My cousin was like this and after a few all day hikes he started upgrading.  He still is frugal and relies on me a little but doesnt complain and always holds serve.  Just not as comfortable sometimes.  Some gear is required but gear does not make the man.
MAGA!  Again..

Like others said, it's better to learn your own lessons.  Just pack some tinture of benzoine and mole skin for your buddy.  Maybe some tylenol and airplane bottles?

I'm all about gear but some guys really don't need much. You know his personality if he's a quitter or not that will tell you more then his gear. Just give him a heads up that this is what you bring that's work well for you and how some things you feel are real important items you feel he should get. Other then that if he's that hard core and doesn't need much bring him.

My opinion on this matter is pretty simple.  Hunting season is what it is, A SEASON.  There is not enough time to just take someone along that is not on the same page as you are no matter what level you are on.  You have to go into the woods surrounding yourself with people that you can rely on and ones you dont have to worry about getting in trouble.  Wasting a trip like that is not an option.  Let him know how important the right gear is on a hunt of this magnitude

I agree with what most have said: let him figure it out on a scouting/test run. That being said, I would draw the line at safety...If his lack of gear will get him hurt/killed and your the one left to drag him out, then that's a different story.
For Pete's sake...pick up your feet, man!

REI rents all kinds of stuff.   Maybe rent a few basics and then if he likes it, he will have an idea of what decent boots and pack feel like and they will be properly fitted.  If he does not like the trip, he is only out the rental $.

Now that I think about it.  I must admit, I did run into one guy hiking cross country in Sandles.  I was camped at Louis Creek falls in the Napeequa.  A guy came up and said hello with a thousand pounds of photography equipment.  He said he was from Oregon.  He started straight up the hill side to Louis Creek basin.

I thought for sure he would blow out a flip flop.  But he looked like he'd done it before.

At different times in my life I'd have taken that guy.  Those "hunts" would have fallen apart and we'd have camped with guns.  I was ok with that then. If you're ok blowing a season to hang out with buds, have at it, it's a fine pass-time.

The biggest partner check isn't ultimately going to be his gear. It's going to be his stones. Give me a guy with below average equipment all day if that guy is FIT physically and hard mentally.  If you're doing the high hunt you are going to be many miles and lots of elevation in when the real work starts.  The fact that the guy doesn't get far off the road is an indicator of how comfortable he is in his shoes out-there. Not very it sounds like. He going to be OK when the last mile has no trail, is straight up and has some sketchy terrain?  Even if he's fit, will he then be willing to split up to attack a drainage?  Even if he's in decent shape, has he humped a 60 lb pack 10 miles? That's just his gear let alone what he'll have to hump if something get's shot.

Of course the where/when/distance makes a lot of difference in this deal but the big picture is the same. Is he able and willing to suffer and endure, if not, he should stay home.

Nice to see you around here, Colville.

Trial run in his romeo's this summer...steep and deep....one night, 10-12 miles round trip. That'll learn him.
There's one thing to be the gear *censored* versus getting by with less, then there's another thing being completely unprepared.

ive thought of that, my only issue there is im probably going to waste a trip...
?
Regardless. Thats what being a friend is all about, spending time with a buddy who is actually interested in something doesnt sound like a waste to me. Wish my friends were that outgoing...
