Not sure. Make sure to be careful. I saw my aunt and uncle both get knocked down by wave while in hole pulling a razor out at low tide (Twin Harbors). They were rolled around and washed out, but were able to get back up. I don't even want to think what could happen to a toddler.

So if they can get in the hole and grab the clam theyre good to go. But hanging on dad's back isn't going to fly

My interpretation is they have to dig their own clams.  Last time out in January my 10 year old girl just could not dig them, so we shorted ourselves a limit and guess what!  The fish cops pulled up and checked us at the truck, made sure they were in seperate bags and one asked us to count them out (bad cop), but the second (good cop) said we were good to go.  Be careful and understand the rules, it may be worth a call to the department, the fine is not cheap for an extra limit.

I think 16 months is too young. We took our daughters at ages 3 & 5, and even at that it was tough helping them get their limits.

I think I'd hold off for at least two years.

I've gone 3 times in the past few months with either my son (teenager) or my wife.  Both times I saw someone get knocked over in the surf and rolled around.  We also had a few waves creep up on us while not paying attention.  It would be over my risk threshold to take a baby out into the surf strapped on to me.   :twocents:

Surf digging is for the big boys, Follow the tide out and there are plenty of shows well above the surf as soon as she gets her limit with grampa then she hangs out with grama while I go play on the edge and get my limit
