Sand isn't just a fancy new FDE tone, though. It's an entirely new polymer, developed to specifically accommodate color additives without sacrificing strength. This has traditionally been an issue when manufacturing polymers, and the Sand material solves it, while simultaneously reducing the mag's IR signature.

The new Sand color retains the same chemical resistance, stability, endurance and reliability as the original GEN M3 PMAG, yet with significant increases in feed lip strength. Evidently, this new material is so strong, it surprised even Magpul's engineers. And those guys know a thing or two about polymers.

There's another important reason the sand shade was chosen: It readily accepts water-based Rit dyes, for endless color pattern possibilities and combinations. Consumers have been Rit dyeing Magpul products for years, and this lighter-shade mag will make it even easier to adapt magazines to a specific environment.

I bought 50+ of the original MagPul's when they first came out.  A few 20's and a bunch of 30's (I do alot of P-dog huntin').  All of my 30's are the 'windowed' version.

It's obvious that you have much more knowledge and experience with the progression/developement of these mags over time and I was wondering what changes (design and materials) have taken place from the initial MagPuls to these current models.  It's clear that some changes have been made as I believe that your reference to Gen M3 likely indicates that at least 3 notable changes have taken place over the years.

I ask because if there were reliability/strength/etc. issues found with the first run of these mags (of which I own), I'd certainly be interested and inclined to acquire a # of the most current offering.  Do they still even offer a 'windowed' version of their newest offerings....?

I've fired thousands of rounds from my MagPuls without issue and would have no problem in continuing to use them for sporting purposes, but my real concern obviously has more to do with my the most prudent choice for a personal defense mag (both in 20 and 30 rd.).

Thanks in advance...... :).

May 15th:

Again.....I just naturally thought that we could post questions in this section rather than just placing an order here.  I thought that you might have the answer to my above questions that could help me to decide if I need to purchase these newest generation MagPuls in order to feel a bit safer and confident in using them.

I will go online and seek out the information that I thought you might know something about, so no worries.  I expect that the 'upgrades' have been beneficial enough that I'd likely order the newest MagPul offerings in bulk as I do most everything.

Thanks anyway and if you're interested in what changes have taken place over these many years with these MagPul mags, I'll gladly share that information with you after studying up on the subject...  Since we're all from the same HW family, whatever I can do the help other members to make a more informed decision.....I certainly will.

Thanks anyway....!

I apologize for my delayed reply, work has kept me away. Magpul magazines have been the strongest most reliable magazine on the market since their introduction.  GenM3's are a result of several changes to better the magazines all around performance. Improved feeding as compared to the Gen1,s, improved mag catch design,  the same magwell fit and feed design as the GenM2, new designed floor plates for a smaller base width for stacking mags in mag carriers tighter, dot matrix identification panels, GenM3's include a dust cover where as dust covers must be purchased seperatly with GenM2's, over travel stop so as not to over insert on multi compatible weapons, improved front and rear texture for possitive grip.

All in all if your running the current GenM2's or the GenM3's your good to go.

Thanks for the very informed response.....  Your answer included much more about the upgraded mods than I ever would have expected had taken place.

My mags are the original mags that MagPul offered, but I also have several that came with the dust covers that were purchased a bit later than when I first purchased them.  Does that mean that some are Gen1 and some are Gen2 ...?  And since I do have a ton of the original MagPuls, in your opinion, are there any deficiencies in these particular mags that would make you lean towards changing them out....?

Thanks again for the great response.....it was certainly helpful..... ;).
