Idaho unit 45; drawn!!!
« on: June 25, 2016, 12:16:52 PM »
So excited, I got drawn for an Archery mule deer tag in idaho's famed unit 45! My cousin lives in Boise and knows the area better than I do, but I'm excited to scout and get a chance at a monster Mule deer.

I know some members  on here have had some experience in the area.  Any advice on how  to maximize my scouting trips? Not sure how many trips I can spare between other obligations, want to maximize my time.

Will keep the trip log up-to date through my adventure.  :IBCOOL:

Used to be a good hunt, about 5 years ago or so Internet has way to over publicized it.

Jealous of you man! I had the rifle tag last season. Killed my buck the 7th or 8th day into my trip. Only saw one other "shooter" and passed on him the first day I was there.  It all holds deer just some areas way more than others.  I'm sure your cousin will know some good spots to check out but shoot me a pm if you need some more areas to check out scouting

So reading more and talking with other hunters that have been there, it looks like I might want to hold out for a 150" plus bucks??? :o. I've always been more of a meat hunter but there's always a first for everyone...

I've seen many more 140" bucks killed than 180" bucks in that unit.

Shoot what makes you happy.

There are plenty of easier "meat" hunts to draw than 45, even over the counter. If all you were interested in is meat, why apply there? :dunno:

Maybe because he wants the "chance" to hunt big deer? Maybe because a 150" buck is a good buck to him? Maybe because he just wanted a chance to hunt a great unit with limited hunters? Who really cares, he got lucky, drew the tag, enjoy your hunt...

Yep hold out for at least that until the last day of your hunt! How long are you going to be there? I think you will have multiple stalk opportunities on 150"+ bucks and maybe a giant or two throughout the course of your hunt.

257 has it right!  I have never killed a 150 class mule deer, so that is a big deer for me.

Phool, as far as being a meat hunter.... I mean that if I see a legal buck, I take him.  I don't hold out for the phantom largest buck on the mountain.  But when you put in for a tag that has a larger than average number of large bucks, and you pull it, you don't necessarily take the first buck you see.

Posting a pick of jackelope's mule deer 150 inches..... Works for me 😄

I hear ya. A 150" muley with archery gear is a trophy anyway, in open country it's even nicer.

Here is a scouting update.  Checked a few areas, and the latest area had the best results.  Of course they were in a private field, but they are there! Hope to see some of these in a month!

@Boneaddict Sorry for the late reply and Notice of you asking.... Don't get on here much anymore.  Moved to Idaho and Wife had twins so life is much more hectic!  I didn't get an email alert;  :dunno:

Hunt was alot of fun but had Tag soup.  Mostly because all the big bucks we saw were in Private ground and knew where to go to avoid the public while transitioning to beds.  I did get a opportunity at one but he caught me drawing during high wind and just couldn't find the shot I wanted. JUST TWO MORE STEPS!

But attaching a picture of the Buck I targeted.   Really fun to have him at 32 yards in fully Ghillie suit.... in 85 degree heat...haha

thanks for asking.  apologize its so late!
