Was so close today it hurt
« on: October 22, 2019, 08:55:18 PM »
Actually, it was really painful!!!

I was hunting a new area today that had lots of potential, lots of game trails and tracks. I was headed to a spot that I saw on a map that was a little further away from private and, from a satellite view, looked a little more like conifers than alders. I still moved slowly as I navigated the roads and trails to get to my, yet to set eyes on, spot.

On one of the closed roads I was hunting I saw a decent game trail and as I walked by, for some reason, took a step back because I thought I saw some rusty sheet metal or a piece of old machinery. It was a deer! All I could see was a furry back. I slide back a little more and saw it was a doe. I move forward and her head was behind a bush. Five yards away in an any deer area! I twisted the plunger safety off on my in-line (firearm restricted area).

The thoughts were in my head, fill the freezer or wait for a buck.....hmm. Well maybe there is a buck with her. And no sooner did I think that I saw the bucks head come up above her back, ten yards from me. Sweet!!

I pulled up my rifle and ok, now she just needs to move out of my way. I held for a couple of seconds and she starts to move off to the left. I flick the trigger safety off, squeeze the trigger and.....

Nothing! No bang, no click, no movement nothing!

*\%!], pull on the plunger to make sure it was back, nothing. :$+’@! I flick the trigger safety back and forth, nothing. (~#+, what the {=•\]

I was actually quite proud of how quiet I kept my expletives!

I unscrews the plunger and yanked it out. The piece that releases the plunger was seized, from hunting in the rain yesterday, and now in the down position. I pulled out the multi tool and started to work but I heard the deer move off and I knew I’d never see them again.

For the first time in 14 years of deer hunting I have a legal buck in my sights and.....

My interpretation of the rules are open to interpretation.
Once I thought I was wrong but I was mistaken.

Sorry for your bad luck.  Hang in there brother.  Sounds like you're close to making it happen.

Perhaps a nice rifled slug gun would be a better choice.  Sometimes it's hard to spend the money, but after all the time, gas, and effort, it just makes life a lot easier with more predictable results.

It doesn’t sound like you alarmed them.  Get that gun cleaned up and try again!

Great story!  I am SO rooting for you!

It is no consolation, but for "me too" commiseration, my errors with a rifle mechanism have cost me a clicked shot once on an elk and once on a wolf at close ranges.
