Ocean Charter Recommendations
« on: June 21, 2021, 01:12:28 PM »
Anyone have recommendations for ocean charter guides? Or words of caution about any guide outfits for that matter...Looking to go in July on a company trip. Thinking of targeting tuna, Halibut if open, and bottomfish. No geographic requirements other than staying in Washington.

Halibut won't be open.

Tuna possibly but they come when they want. So they may or may not be in range...best bet is a salmon trip or salmon rockfish trip.

How many people...?  I would go 6 pack express boat if I had the choice, one of Coleman's boat's. All River's. Or far corners, tail walker are also both good.

If not most of the big cattle boat's are the same. It's going to be strictly availability.

Ahh I'm not familiar at all with how Halibut or any of the saltwater fishing works out here really. Good to know.

Look into booking the Slammer with Rhett and crew. Can't go wrong with them, but they are a big boat operation.

Also another consideration if your looking for a 6 pack boat is All Rivers, Mark and Merry Coleman's outfit. Another top notch guide service

Yeah I think 6 might be small. Depends on our groups availability, if we only end up with six those smaller boats are definitely preferred. If only there was an 8!

I'm used to Gulf charters for snapper, that's where most of my charter experience is.

I think you would have to be very lucky to be able to book a boat for tuna on any of the 6 packs right now.

If he's available I would book with All Rivers on his new 42 footer for tuna. Amazing boat with gyro stabilizer and shock absorber seats. Some of the best captains I have run across.

If you are headed out of Ilwaco. the best of the fleet is Coho charters.  Either Butch on the Coho King or Mooch on the Coho Mooch will get you into fish and you will have a blast doing it.  Top notch people right there.

I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the charter offices in Westport. Ocean Sportfishing, Westport Charters or Deep Sea, all are great. I'd call all 3 offices and see which outfit has a boat open to meet your needs. I have fished with all 3 outfits and all put you on fish. A boat that is maybe not quite as popular but has been getting great reviews is the Angler out of Ocean Sport Fishing. I believe the two most popular are the Hula Girl with Westport Charters, and the Slammer with Deep Sea. I have fished the Ranger, Blue Eyes, Hula Girl, Stardust, Tornado, Swifty, (Freedom & Starfire which are gone now) and had a great time every time. A company trip should be a blast with who ever can accommodate your needs. Have Fun!

Lots of good info here, thanks everyone. We're gonna get a headcount and best date for the group and go from there. See if we need to go with a big boat or if we're going to squeeze down into a 6-man. Would be great to get in on one of the combo trips for salmon and bottomfishing but not sure if that's a possibility with having to go on a Friday.

We went 2 weeks ago on the "Tequila Too" from Deep Sea Charters. Fast limits for the whole boat. They maxed the boat at 16 people due to Covid which gave us all extra space. It was great.

What do all of you tip at the end of a charter?  Is there a general rule of thumb?  If a charter costs $350 and all is good and fish are caught/cleaned, what would you tip?
10%, 20%?  couple few $20's?  Do you tip the same amount for the workers on the boat?  Say $50 x2 guys for a $100?

We always did 15% for an okay job, 20% for good, and 25% for great for snapper charters in the Gulf.

Definitely the SLAMMER with Deep Seas Charter. We had 18 people and we all limited out in very short order on Lings and RockFish.
