North Dakota deer
« on: June 25, 2022, 10:48:27 AM »
Out of state for you guys, but not for me. I drew a rifle deer tag this year. I need to get some good meat in the freezer so I put in for an either species doe tag & got it. I haven’t hunted deer with my .30-06 for a long time & I've never hunted from a blind box before. I already have permission on one of the farms I bird hunt on, so I’m really looking forward to November

I’ve tried and tried to figure out how to apply for the North Dakota deer tags, they are the single most difficult state to interpret in my experience. I am waiting on South Dakota draw results though. Hoping my 5 pts will have me hunting big prairie mule deer this year

It’s confusing for sure. Worse for non residents, I think. You have to pick a zone, species & buck or antler less. As a resident I just have to pick a zone & buck/antlerless. I haven’t figured out if there a lot of deer here,  but I’ve seen more than a couple true monsters while bird hunting.

Only up to one percent of the tag quota can go to non-residents.   So if there is 400 tags for a specific hunt, only 4 can go to nonresidents.  On top of that, nonresident landowners get first shot at the nonresident tags.  So if there is a quota of 400 total tags and only 4 nonresident tags and 10 nonresident landowners put in along with 10 nonresidents, then there is a drawing for the 4 tags between the nonresident landowners and the 10 nonresidents never have a chance at all for any tags.  There are drawing statistics on the Game dept web page but they do not include the nonresident draw odds.  You first have to call the game dept and talk to the draw specialists and see if there is even a chance of you drawing a tag in a unit.  They might tell you, yes there are 4 nonresident tags for that unit but in the last so many years they have all went to nonresident landowners.  Believe me I know because i have 13 points in ND and just found out a couple of years ago that the badlands mule deer buck tag I was trying to get was actually never going to happen because there was more nonresident landowners applying each year than the few tags that were allotted to nonresidents.  So I have been looking for tags that have less nonresident landowner applicants than they have tags.  This is tough when only one percent of the quota goes to nonresidents. One other quick tip is that for the first two or three years I think, you get one bonus point per year.  Then after that they start cubing your bonus points.  It is definitely probably the most non-friendly nonresident state in the west/midwest.

My two brother and I along with a friend applied for ND back in 2010 and at that point there were more tags allowed then applicants. All four of us drew any deer tags for archery equipment. Tough hunt for sure but sooo much fun we ended up 2 for four bucks
I don't always shoot big mule deer, but when I do, it's with a bow tech!

Yes archery is a whole another story in North Dakota. The governor allots so many nonresident archery tags and there is decent odds of getting them. Not sure the whole process. In my post above I was talking modern rifle.

I don’t know why they make it so hard. A non resident can get an archery white tail tag over the counter. They're not limited. But non resident archery mule deer tags are limited 15 percent of the total mule deer gun season licenses made available during the previous year. I don’t know if there are many white tails in the badlands. I’ve wanted to go here for a long time & was going to go last year, but there was a disease pretty widespread through the deer that was made a lot worse from the drought. The state refunded everybody’s license fees & points because if it. North Dakota definitely has a bias towards land owners that I don’t really like. I don’t even bother putting in for turkey because if that. I drive somewhere I can just buy a tag & hunt.

I literally can’t even figure out on their website when and how to apply, I actually did already know this part though. Their website may have been updated since I was looking 2 or so years ago though.

We hunted about 20 miles into ND from the Montana border. We were into both white tails and mule deer everyday.  The mule deer were alway found in the bad lands and the white tails were found near creek bottoms and agricultural land. We gained access to a farm while we were there and I ended up shooting a small white tail buck on our last full day there

they call it their deer lottery. It usually closes every year around June 8th. Results came out 3-5 days ago.  You can’t check to see if you have drawn on the web page. They send you a personal email telling you your results.

They put it on their website now. You have to login to your account & it’s on the main page of your account. They don’t send emails anymore

I was headed there to photograph this fall, but with gas the way it is, I think I’ll bump it yet another year.

I don’t blame you. It cost me $60 to fill up my little Hyundai Saturday morning. That’s a lot better than it would have been in the pickup, though.
