hunting/calling cows?
« on: June 21, 2009, 12:58:43 PM »
My wife and I drew the Margaret G tag (antlerless only) and I was wondering if you can call cows in to you.  I would think that you could always use a cow call as a locater for other cows  Any opinions/advice?

I've called cows in by trying to sound like a lost calf.

:yeah:

x2, but be careful, I have had cows almost run over me looking for that calf,  :chuckle:
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

Thanks guys, is there such a thing as a calf/lost calf call or could I do that with a cow call?  Also any ideas where I could get a copy of that sound.

The last couple of years I've had cows come straight into a locater bugle. Pretty exciting hearing them come in but then no horns. I've not called cows in with a cow call ever, in fact in my area on the east side , I've only heard actual cows talking twice. ( other than the alarm). What ever I did, I would do it sparingly, I hear hunters walking around calling continuous & not very realistic. Good luck  Mike.

I've had cows RUN towards me when I've done that in the past.  You can probably find a video that can help you distinguish between the cow and calf calls.  The Primos Cowgirl can sort of sound like a calf to me (that's the one that I was using when a cow ran from the timber on the other side of clearcut, 200 yards across it and then right to me.)

Thanks for all the help guys.  I found a guy on another website by the name of elknut and he has videos including "calling all cows" that I am going to try as well.  Good luck to everyone this year.

The only way I've called cows into me was calling the bull to me and he drug the cows past me.  IMHO cows are much smarter than bulls in September.

Yeah I wouldn't trust this "elknut" guy.  Sounds sort of sketchy to me.  :chuckle:

I used to have a lost calf recording for a ring tone on my cell.  Since I use my cell instead of wearing a watch, I set the tones to all nature recordings when I'm out in the woods. I keep the cell phone on even if there is no service and have shocked myself a couple of times with the lost calf when a text or email has managed to make it through.  I wish I still had all those files but lost them when we switched service providers.

Here's a cool video from Elk Heaven with a lost calf: http://www.elkheaven.com/video/calf-web.wmv

Try this. It's what I do. First, till up a pretty good plot of land. Be sure to include lots of blood meal and bone meal. Then plant lots of corn, snap peas, peppers, sunflowers, the works. Oh, and be sure to make room for beans, both pole and bush beans. Treat the plants with love and care. Weed all around them and pick out the big rocks. Don't forget to water them good and deeply.

Always seems to bring the black *censored*s around.
Always have a 22 laying around, but learn to be quick. Dang crows are smart and will catch on to your antics. Good luck.

Thanks again for all the help guys.  Is it Sept. 8th yet?  I am so excited for this hunt and can't wait for July so I can go scout the unit.  That video was exactly what I was looking for and love the bull at the end of the vid.
