Where are the biggest black bears
« on: May 13, 2008, 10:44:45 PM »
What would be the best place to go for a monster black bear. I've heard a lot of hype about the islands off BC, and some about back east. I'm just wondering what you guys think.

I've heard some of the isles off of BC...but if I had to guess, I would say Alaska...stands to reason...large amount of area, less hunting pressure....

I'd say the prince or princess charlotte black bears would be good. They are considered the biggest black bears. They gave them that special name, cause there special. :P There what I would hunt if I was going to go to canada.

They get alot of big bodied bears, the 600 pounders we hear about all the time in Alberta.  I agree with all the others mentioned.   Biggest one I have seen was SE Alaska.  She was gigantic and her cubs were the sixe of what we call decent bears here in Wa.

I would suspect for combo of size and numbers BC and Alberta.  Check the books.... should bare out a few clear choices. Any Blackie over 300lbs is truly a big bear.  When they start topping 400 & 500 those are monsters.

I would agree that the biggest is probably BC or Alberta. Some of those shose that show them hunting over the bait barrels make them look like thay ate too many doughnuts. But you have to figure that the ones near the rivers are probably some of the biggest since they feed on fish. Just like the Big Brownies of Kodiak. But the largest blackie was taken in Utah in 1975 and scored 23 10/16. So a bear might be large body wise but not have the largest skull. So depends on your definition of what "monster" entails.

Body wise I would say the Carolina's. I had an email from several years ago that showed a bear that weighed 880 lbs. It looked like a volkswagen bug in the back of a truck. I think they get big because they hang out on soybean fields.

I just got off the phone with a buddy from Florida, and he's got a 500 pounder in his yard every evening.  The kicker is that the state declared them a threatened species and stopped the hunting seasons.  That would be a sweet bowhunt!

"Pass me another cold one; I'm ready to get out."
"Yep, this hot tub is getting a bit warm."
"Shhhhh.  There he is!"
"Here's your bow: 11.4 yards."
"THWACK!"
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

I would think the biggest are in PA or SE AK ... when I was guiding salmon trips up in Alaska some PA customers were talking about 700 to 850lb black bears in there area.

Well, your never gonna believe me but the coast of North Carolina is amazing for numbers and size. They mostly dog hunt out there but they also make fun of people for shooting 300 pound blackies! :yike:

Its VERY common to kill 500 lb plus bears and its gotta get over I think 850 for ya to wanna get it to a scale to check it against the state record.
