Dog keeps howling while crated.
« on: February 08, 2012, 03:23:52 PM »
My dog has been howling non stop whenever I leave the house and leave him in the crate.

He loves his crate and if I leave the door open on it, he will sleep in there instead of his dog bed.

Any tips on how I can get him to stop howling while crated?

Do you know if he is howling because you are leaving or just from the crate? What if you left him somewhere else and left? Does he still howl? The point I am getting at is trying to figure out if it is the crate with the door closed that bothers him or you leaving....

It is me leaving him.

If i leave him with my girlfriend's parents he will cry for a long time because he misses me.

It sounds like he is comfortable with the crate so that isn't the issue. Maybe try leaving something in the crate that has your smell all over it to see if that helps...  :dunno:

Maybe I should just leave a pair of my old gym socks on my pillow so that the old lady doesn't have to cry herself to sleep every night when I am gone on my hunting trips.  :tung:

I think it's got to be a smell they like, not just the fumes knocking the dog, or the wife, out.    :chuckle:

Not the same thing, but my Lab started howling while in his crate on the way to go hunting.  I guess he's just so excited to go hunting he can't help it.  Started this year over in Yakima.  Really annoying to listen to...  I just turn up the stereo. :dunno:

I love rolling down the road, 6 dogs in the back knowing we're getting close to where we'll be hunting barking and getting excited....

Someday I'll get to go on a cat hunt....

My Stepmom (Jackie) had a Male and Female Cockerspanial (sp?).  Both were 6 months apart in age.  When we went to bed the routine was to lock them in the Laundry room where they had beds, food, and water.

The Female (Amy) was I believe 12 years old.  She was VERY attached to Jackie.  If Jackie went into a room and shut the door Amy would lay by the door and wouldn't move.  If Jackie was on the couch Amy was on her lap 85% of the time.  Amy keep in close contact all the time.  Except at night when everyone went to bed they were put in the Laundry room.

She was going blind and had been for a few years.  Just all of a sudden one day when you put them in the laundry room and shut the door she would start barking.  At first she would lock up well but around 4 am she would start barking non stop until someone let her out.  Then it got earlier and earlier 3am, 1 am, Midnight.  Until she started barking as soon as the door closed.  This went on for a couple months.  We couldn't figgure out what was wrong.  We thought maybe it was because she was going blind and once the light went off she couldn't see.  So we left the light on.  It worked for a few days.

Jackie took her to the vet and they said she was full of cancer.  She came home for a few more days so Jackie could say her good byes and than she was put down.

To this day I still feel very strongly that Amy knew something was wrong with her and she wanted to be with her Mom 24/7 because it was a comfort to her.

I would use an old towl to rub your sent on and toss in the crate, sox are bad because you could confuse the dog... I would also use a radio alarm clock with some music...  :twocents:
